San Diego Mesa College Hosts Veterans Week Celebrations
By Cristy Ocana, Office of Communications
San Diego Mesa College is hosting events throughout the week for Veterans Celebration
Week. Today, students gathered to learn more about veterans’ experiences at the Supporting
our Deported Veterans panel. Specialist Hector Barajas spoke along with our District
Board of Trustee Peter Zschiesche, and Case Manager for the Employee Rights Center
Marisol Turincio.
Spc. Hector Barajas shared his personal story of his own deportation, facing many
obstacles such as separating from his beloved family. Fortunately, he found his way
back to the United States and reconnected with his 13-year-old daughter.
After reflecting on his struggles, he founded the Deported Veterans Support House
“The Bunker” in Tijuana, Mexico. This support house, with help from the Employee Rights
Center, helps deported veterans by giving them food, clothing, shelter, and anything
else the veterans might need.
