Student Spotlight: Emerald Moreno Pursues Purpose Through Psychology, Faith, and Resilience
By Office of Communications
Psychology major Emerald Moreno is inspired by a passion for understanding and interpreting
others, along with a deep faith that psychology is her calling. Believing that God
has gifted her with discernment, Moreno has always been curious about human behavior
and is passionate about understanding people’s motives, emotions, and actions so she
can better serve and positively impact those around her. She plans to transfer to
a university to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology, minor in Spanish, and continue
exploring a future in law.
Moreno's journey at San Diego Mesa College has been marked by perseverance and determination.
While pursuing her education, she faced significant personal challenges, including
periods of homelessness, frequent relocations, and health struggles. Despite these
obstacles, she remained committed to her academic goals with the support of Mesa's
caring faculty, staff, and student support programs.
Several Mesa employees played a pivotal role in her success. Professor Valerie's guidance
during Moreno's first semester provided support when she needed it most and helped
her continue her educational journey. Professor Crosby's dedication and willingness
to meet with students during office hours helped Moreno stay engaged in her coursework
and improve academically during one of the most difficult periods of her life.
Dr. Torres also had a profound impact on Moreno's experience at Mesa. Through his
mentorship, transparency, and encouragement, he helped her better understand the psychology
field and prepare for her future academic goals. Moreno credits Dr. Torres with creating
meaningful connections with students and inspiring her through his commitment to continuous
learning and personal growth.
In addition to academic mentorship, Moreno found encouragement from Miss Kim at the
Mesa College Library, whose support helped strengthen her confidence and interest
in pursuing a career in law. She also credits programs such as EOPS and STAR TRIO
for providing counseling, resources, and guidance that helped her stay on track toward
transfer.
Beyond academics, Moreno plans to continue her passion for dance by creating hip hop
choreography set to Christian hip hop music, blending creativity and faith through
original performances.
Reflecting on her Mesa experience, Moreno is grateful for the community that helped
her persevere through adversity and prepare for the next chapter of her educational
journey.
“Treat college like your career has begun,” Moreno said, describing the mindset she
brought with her to college. “Choosing Mesa was the right choice. Here, I found the
support, guidance, and opportunities to grow academically, pursue my goals, and spread
my wings,” she said.
