San Diego Mesa College Professor Jordyn Smiley, MFA, has earned the distinction of becoming a CLO Accredited Instructor, bringing advanced industry expertise in 3D fashion design and virtual garment development directly into the classroom.
Psychology major Emerald Moreno is inspired by a passion for understanding and interpreting others, along with a deep faith that psychology is her calling. She plans to transfer to a university to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology, minor in Spanish, and continue exploring a future in law.
After a major surgery and months of recovery, Tracey Kushner faced a decision that would reshape her future. In 2024, she returned to San Diego Mesa College determined to finish the degree she had started years earlier.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — San Diego Mesa College proudly celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2026 during its annual Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 29, 2026, honoring 1,958 graduates who earned more than 2,017 academic degrees and 414 certificates. A total of 727 graduates participated in the ceremony, joined by family, friends, faculty, staff, and community supporters.

Mesa College Fashion Professor Earns CLO Accredited Instructor Credential
San Diego Mesa College Professor Jordyn Smiley, MFA, (third from the left) has earned the distinction of becoming a CLO Accredited Instructor, bringing advanced industry expertise in 3D fashion design and virtual garment development directly into the classroom.
The credential recognizes Smiley’s proficiency in CLO 3D, professional software used to create, modify and visualize garments digitally. For Mesa College Fashion students, her expertise provides an opportunity to develop hands-on experience with technology increasingly used in apparel design, technical design and product development.
“This accomplishment is an exciting step forward for our Fashion Program and, most importantly, for our students,” said Monica Romero, Dean of Business and Technology. “Having an instructor with this level of specialized training means students are learning industry relevant technology from a faculty member who has demonstrated advanced proficiency with the software.”
Using CLO 3D, students can transform two-dimensional patterns into three-dimensional garments, simulate fabric fit and drape on a body, apply prints and textures, and create virtual samples, tech packs, and fashion presentations. These digital workflows allow designers to experiment with garments before producing physical samples and can help reduce materials used during the design and development process.
Smiley’s credential strengthens Mesa College’s ability to incorporate digital garment creation, virtual prototyping, fashion visualization, and technology-driven product development into its Fashion curriculum.
This semester, Mesa students will have the opportunity to learn CLO 3D directly from an accredited instructor, bringing industry level expertise into the classroom. Students who complete FASH 171 with an 85% or better will earn a certification in CLO, which they can put on their resume and LinkedIn Profile.
For students interested in careers in fashion and apparel, exposure to professional digital design tools can help connect classroom learning with evolving industry practices.
Smiley’s accomplishment reflects the Mesa College Fashion Program’s continued commitment to providing students with relevant instruction, emerging technology and skills that can prepare them for the changing fashion industry.

The Mesa College Fashion Department’s students, alumni, and faculty have teamed up to address the issue of mask shortages in the healthcare industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They are mobilizing sewists and manning their machines, with some putting their own businesses and operations on pause to support the needs of hospital workers and their patients. Together, they have already managed to sew and distribute hundreds of masks throughout the community.

On May 12, 2017, San Diego Mesa College’s Fashion Program hosts the 36th Annual Golden Scissors Fashion Show, organized and produced by Mesa fashion promotion students, where fashion design majors showcase their one-of-a-kind collections. This is a great way to bring the San Diego community together and to support local community college students.
