The “Mesa Promise Match Challenge” Raises Nearly $40,000 After Only 10 Days
By Office of Communications
San Diego, CA. — Today, San Diego Mesa College announced that the “Mesa Promise Match Challenge 2018”, which launched on August 10, 2018, has already raised nearly $40,000 in only 10
days. For the Challenge, the Mesa College Foundation is generously matching up to
$25,000 of all monetary donations made towards the San Diego Promise on behalf of
Mesa College through Friday, September 14, 2018. A new exciting feature for Mesa
College is the ability to track donation progress live on the Match Challenge webpage
at www.sdmesa.edu/PromiseChallenge18.
“We are overwhelmed by the generosity shown so far by the Mesa College community,
our alumni, and our partners to help fund this initiative,” stated President Pamela
T. Luster. “We are hopeful that we can continue this momentum and exceed our goal.”
The Challenge will culminate at An Evening with Annette Bening, to Benefit the San Diego Promise, a gala hosted by the San Diego Community College District on September 20 at The San Diego
Natural History Museum, featuring San Diego Mesa College alumna Annette Bening.
The San Diego Promise provides two years of tuition at City, Mesa and Miramar colleges
for first-time, full-time students by leveraging funds provided by the state of California
through the California College Promise, and with support of generous donors. The San
Diego Promise started as a pilot program in 2016 with 186 students, and grew to nearly
700 students in 2017. Over 1,500 students are expected to participate in 2018.
Funding from the California College Promise– which was created in 2017 to provide
free tuition for one year at California community colleges for full-time students
- is expected to significantly bolster the existing San Diego Promise program. As
a result, the San Diego Promise has extended the program to include eligible recent
high school graduates who plan to enroll full-time in fall 2018 semester, and serve
as a completion program – one that provides funding for two years of community college
education for participating students.
