San Diego Mesa College Professor Jordyn Smiley, MFA, has earned the distinction of becoming a CLO Accredited Instructor, bringing advanced industry expertise in 3D fashion design and virtual garment development directly into the classroom.
Psychology major Emerald Moreno is inspired by a passion for understanding and interpreting others, along with a deep faith that psychology is her calling. She plans to transfer to a university to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology, minor in Spanish, and continue exploring a future in law.
After a major surgery and months of recovery, Tracey Kushner faced a decision that would reshape her future. In 2024, she returned to San Diego Mesa College determined to finish the degree she had started years earlier.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — San Diego Mesa College proudly celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2026 during its annual Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 29, 2026, honoring 1,958 graduates who earned more than 2,017 academic degrees and 414 certificates. A total of 727 graduates participated in the ceremony, joined by family, friends, faculty, staff, and community supporters.

Mesa College fashion students take their talent to the runway with the annual Golden Scissors Fashion Show. Themed “East Meets West,” the fashion show – an annual production since 1981 – is a fun, fabulous, runway event for all fashionistas. It will be held at 5:30 p.m., Friday, May 6, at the Sheraton Hotel on Harbor Island Drive.
“It’s a fun night and a fun way to culminate months of hard work, planning and collaboration, and two semesters of intense study,” said fashion professor Meegan Feori. “We are proud to showcases our students’ creativity and talent, and what the southern California fashion industry has to look forward to when they graduate and enter the workforce.”
Over 100 pieces – from kimono themed garments to casual and business attire to hats and children’s collections -- will make their debut. All pieces are original designs, conceived and constructed by fashion design students.
In fact, the entire show is a student production. The fashion promotion class coordinates the execution of the show, including publicity, fundraising and event production. Mesa’s media majors take care of lighting and audio. Hair and make-up services are provided by cosmetology students from San Diego City College. Design collections of Mesa College fashion alumni will also be featured.
Golden Scissors kicks off at 5:30 p.m. at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina with a VIP reception, silent auction, and opportunity drawings. All proceeds go toward student scholarships. The runway extravaganza begins at 7:30 p.m.

The Mesa College Fashion Department’s students, alumni, and faculty have teamed up to address the issue of mask shortages in the healthcare industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They are mobilizing sewists and manning their machines, with some putting their own businesses and operations on pause to support the needs of hospital workers and their patients. Together, they have already managed to sew and distribute hundreds of masks throughout the community.

On May 12, 2017, San Diego Mesa College’s Fashion Program hosts the 36th Annual Golden Scissors Fashion Show, organized and produced by Mesa fashion promotion students, where fashion design majors showcase their one-of-a-kind collections.
