Students, faculty and staff at San Diego Mesa College are encouraged to ride their bicycles to work as a part of the city-wide Bike to Work Day on Thursday, May 18.
For the first year, Mesa College will be one of the 100 Bike to Work Day pit stops throughout San Diego where people can take a break on their way to work. From 6 to 9 a.m., participants can get safety information about commuting via bike from San Diego Community College District Police. Participants will also receive free snacks, have repairs done to their bikes and receive a t-shirt.
“As everybody knows, parking is one of the biggest challenges that we face at Mesa College,” said Taj George, Business Services Administrative Technician. “It’s near and dear to my heart to address this issue, because I hear students every day talk about getting to campus. Given how much we have grown, it’s time to explore other transportation alternatives.”
Mesa College’s participation in Bike to Work Day is a part of the ongoing Mesa Moves campaign that, “promotes alternatives transportation efforts.” There are currently 179 active participants in the ridesharing program, which has logged more than 1,000 trips thus far, saving $3,500 and 2.2 tons of CO2 emissions, George said.
Mesa Moves is funded in part by a mini grant from SANDAG and iCommute, which also promotes biking as an alternative form to transportation to work and school.
To find places to park your bike on campus, visit the Mesa College Interactive Map, click the “MesaMoves Transportation icon” and click bike racks to see where all of the racks are at Mesa College.
Visit the iCommute website to register for Bike to Work Day and be eligible for a t-shirt. For more information about Bike to Work Day and Mesa Moves, contact Taj George at [email protected] or (619) 388-2771.
