San Diego Mesa College to Host MesaHacks, a Sustainable Living Themed Hackathon
By Office of Communications
San Diego, CA ---- On Friday, June 1, 2018, San Diego Mesa College will host the San
Diego Community College District’s first hackathon, entitled “MesaHacks”. The event will take place in the Mesa Commons from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. The hackathon theme is sustainable living – over 100 students,
faculty, staff and community members are expected to participate.
A “hackathon” is an event in which programmers, designers, and more come together
to collaborate on the development of a product. Over the duration of the event, students
will learn about new technologies and build connections with others along the way.
“Hackathons are not limited to computer science majors — anyone who has an interest
in technology and is eager to learn can participate in a hackathon”, stated James
Gappy, Mesa College Computer Science Club Faculty Advisor.
A hackathon is intended to provide passionate students with the ability to establish
industry relationships that generate potential employment opportunities. Hackathons
provide real-world experience for the attending students; they compete in teams to
create a product, taking an idea from conceptualization to completion in a quick time-frame,
gaining time-management skills, technical expertise, and new connections. The event
is being held in partnership with the Miramar Computer Science Organization, and with
support from the ICC, Mesa Associated Students, IEEE, NPD, Nordson Asymtek, and Sticker
Mule.
