By Office of Communications
Over $180,000 in scholarships were awarded to San Diego Mesa College students on Friday,
April 22, at the 23rd Annual Scholarship Banquet, held at the DoubleTree by Hilton
San Diego - Mission Valley hotel.
154 Mesa College students received awards, with 42 receiving multiple awards. In total,
there were 99 scholarship opportunities, making it one of the biggest scholarship
awards ceremonies for Mesa.
Among the students to be honored was soon-to-be Mesa graduate Jessica Vallejo, 24,
of San Diego. A former foster youth, Jessica won not only a SEEDS Scholar award, but
also the $40,000 SEEDS Fellowship, which will help her as she prepares to transfer
to San Diego State University this fall to pursue a degree in public health.
Another big winner was Manuel Gonzales, a psychology major also bound for SDSU this
fall. Manuel won the Associated Students Academic Achievement Scholarship, as well
as the $1000 President’s Award for Leadership and Academic Excellence Scholarship.
The scholarships were made possible through the generosity of faculty, staff, people
in the community, and local organizations and businesses.
