San Diego, CA. – Today, San Diego Mesa College will hold a reception for The Shape of Color, the Weight of Light, featuring artworks by Kaori Fukuyama, Christian Garcia-Olivo, and Melissa Walter. San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery hosts this exhibition of pictorial and sculptural investigations on color, light and texture, featuring recent artworks by San Diego-based artists Christian Garcia-Olivo, Kaori Fukuyama and Melissa Walter. The exhibition will run August 22 – September 8, 2022. Artist Kaori Fukuyama will hold a Gallery Talk on Friday, August 26 at 2:00 p.m., with Gallery walk-throughs and talks on Wednesday, August 31 at 3:00p p.m. and Wednesday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m.
The advent of Modernism inspired artists to explore abstraction and in the 20th Century painters were motivated to pursue explorations with a variety of media in order to capture both the material and the immaterial. Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings, physically vigorous in form and action, can be contrasted with the ethereal rigor of perceptual light works by the Southern California Light and Space movement of the 60s and 70s; and to the interest on phenomenology of some conceptual art. The three artists whose works are assembled together in The Weight of Color, The Shape of Light, delve into these legacies; there’s a push and pull of the picture plane, a celebration of both organic and synthetic pigments while surface and materials are manipulated in novel and unexpected ways.

San Diego, CA. – Thursday, October 5 at 4:00 p.m., the San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery presents an illuminating art exhibition that is inspired by the desire to find the ‘glimmers of grace’ in life. This exhibit gives everyone the opportunity to experience the work of, alumna Grace Gray- Adams, someone who has been curating her legacy since studying art in the 1960’s at Mesa College.
I can still hear Francisco Eme’s exhibition, The Resistance of the Echo & La Eco-Resistencia, ringing in my ears—the shrillness of the cicada, the call of the coyote, the whisper of the wind. The Mexico-born, San Diego-based artist’s work is always intensely immersive, so it isn’t unusual to walk away from it feeling changed in some way. But something about this project feels especially compelling.
San Diego, CA. - On Thursday, August 31, 2023, the San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery will host a reception for The Resistance of the Echo & La Eco-Resistencia: a multimedia installation by artist Francisco Eme. This multimedia installation is an urban ecology study focusing on the biological dynamics of a canyon situated in a suburb of San Diego. This work will be displayed through September 14th, in the San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery.
