Second-year student Zora Williams is using her voice to bring more mental health and nutrition programming to San Diego Mesa College. Williams was elected president of the college’s Associated Students (AS) for the 2024-2025 academic year and serves as the college’s student representative on the San Diego Community College District Board of Trustees.
Sometimes, you hear a story that makes you want to know more. Kevin Gonzalez has such a story. The last time this story was updated, San Diego Mesa College student Kevin Gonzalez was a 15 year-old heading off to Massachusetts to complete his high school education. In the ensuing years, he has travelled to the other side of the world, built houses, but remained in close contact with his Mesa College professors and connections he made while on campus.
The San Diego Community College District has appointed four new student trustees for the upcoming academic year. Dalia Ramirez (San Diego City College), Zora Williams (San Diego Mesa College), Hailey Hua (San Diego Miramar College), and Haydee Zuniga (San Diego College of Continuing Education), will be sworn in during the June 20 SDCCD Board of Trustees meeting.

Military veterans at San Diego City and San Diego Mesa colleges got an early Veterans Day present with the announcement of $400,000 in new grants to bolster services at their campus Veterans Resource Centers.
The awards are aimed at increasing the numbers of veterans earning a degree or certificate or transferring to a university, and they are part of $8.5 million in additional funding for 59 Veterans Resource Centers at community college campuses throughout the state. The grants were authorized by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors, and the San Diego Community College District’s (SDCCD) Board of Trustees approved a spending plan for its grants at a meeting in October.
Service to veterans is a top priority of the San Diego Community College District,” said SDCCD Chancellor Constance M. Carroll. “We have already invested in centers, services, and programs for veterans, and we are pleased to have this additional funding for the Veterans Resource Centers.”
These are the second grants City and Mesa colleges have received this year from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office to expand their Veterans Resource Centers. In all, City College has secured a total of $302,000 and Mesa College has received $340,000.
More than 90 of the 114 California community colleges have a Veterans Resource Center dedicated to providing veterans and active duty service members with tools they may need as they transition from a military environment to an academic setting. Benefits include peer mentoring, tutoring, academic and career counseling, guidance on transferring to a four-year college or university, and a gathering place to build community, and more.
California is home to an estimated 1.8 million veterans, and California community colleges enroll approximately 80,000 veterans and active duty members annually. More than 3,500 active and non-active duty military, military veterans, or military spouses and dependents are enrolled at City College, and more than 4,800 are enrolled at Mesa College.
City, Mesa, and Miramar colleges, along with San Diego Continuing Education already provide veterans with career and educational counseling and support, and the new funding will help City and Mesa improve services provided at their veterans’ resource centers.
As the second-largest of California’s 72 community college districts, the San Diego Community College District serves approximately 100,000 students annually through three two-year colleges and San Diego Continuing Education. The three colleges, San Diego City College, San Diego Mesa College, and San Diego Miramar College, offer associate degrees and certificates in occupational programs that prepare students for transfer to four-year colleges and entry-level jobs. Mesa College also offers a bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management. Continuing Education offers noncredit adult education at seven campuses throughout San Diego.

San Diego –On Monday, July 22 to Thursday, July 25, 2024, the San Diego Mesa College Softball program and Nike’s US Sports Camp program will host a half day and day camp for local girls, ages 6-14, at all levels of experience with Softball. Campers will learn the skills required to successfully play at a competitive level and maximize their potential as players.
