Bomb Threat

If You Receive a Bomb Threat

  • Calling for assistance: Employees receiving a bomb threat or discovering a bomb or similar device should immediately notify 911 or Campus Police Dispatch 619-388-6405.
    • DO NOT call while near a suspicious package or object.
    • Give your name, location, and description of the package or object.
    • DO NOT disconnect from the dispatcher until told to do so by the dispatcher.
    • DO NOT return to an evacuated building or area until told to do so by an emergency responder/campus official.
  • Bomb threats usually occur by telephone. If you receive a bomb threat, remain calm and attempt to obtain as much information as possible from the caller.
    • Keep the caller on the phone and ask the following:
      • When is the bomb going to explode?
      • Where is the bomb located?
      • What kind of bomb is it?
      • What does it look like?
      • Why did you place the bomb?
      • What is your name?
      • Note the time the call was received.
      • Note the perceived sex, age, and emotional state of the caller.
      • Note any background noises.
      • Note caller ID phone number.
  • If you cannot use the checklist, immediately write down the following information after the call:
    • Time of call
    • Perceived age and gender of the caller
    • Speech pattern, accent, or other traits
    • Emotional state
    • Background noise
