How to Apply

Allied Health programs have special admissions processes with limited enrollment capacities and high student demand. Be sure to follow each of the following steps to apply for enrollment into the Medical Assisting program.

Steps to Apply

  1. Apply for Admission to Mesa College

    Not a current Mesa College student? Before you submit an application to any of the Allied Health programs, you will need to apply for admission to Mesa College. Becoming a student is free and easy.

  3. Program Prerequisites

    Two prerequisites are required to apply for the Medical Assisting program:

    • MEDA 055 Human Anatomy and Physiology
      or
      BIOL 160 Elements of Human Anatomy & Physiology - If another college divides this into two courses, both courses must be taken.
    • MEDA 110 Medical Terminology

    Students applying and entering the Medical Assisting program are also encouraged to take ALLH 048 Basic Skills for Healthcare Careers prior to starting the program. Prerequisites must be passed with a minimum grade of “C” or higher within the last 5 years prior to applying. If you are enrolled in a prerequisite course at the time you submit your application, you must show proof of current enrollment when submitting your application. Admission into the Medical Assisting program will be pending until each prerequisite is completed. When taking prerequisite courses at another institution, please verify with counseling, before enrollment, that they transfer to Mesa College.

  4. Complete the Online Program Application

    Submit an online application for the Medical Assisting program within the application time period from TBD. Your application should include specified personal information, unofficial transcripts, and other program specific information.

  5. Submit Your Official Transcripts

    Submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities that you have attended. Official transcript submission is required for the application process however, evaluation of the official transcripts is not required to be considered a qualified candidate.     Note: If you have completed your prerequisites at City, Mesa, or Miramar College, you do not need to submit an official transcript. Your transcript will be obtained directly from the SDCCD records office on your behalf.

  6. Update Your Contact Information

    You are responsible for maintaining a current email address with Special Admissions and responding to requests for confirmation of your continued interest in admission into the program sent during the year. Be sure to return each such notice by the stipulated date to maintain the admission status.

What to Expect After You Apply

Once you complete and submit your application, you will be placed on a “qualified applicants” list. Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will NOT be considered. Completion of all designated prerequisites does not guarantee admission. Acceptance and waitlist letters will be sent out to qualified students in May.


UPON ACCEPTANCE INTO THE MEDICAL ASSISTING PROGRAM STUDENTS MUST:

  1. Have a current Healthcare Provider CPR Certification or have completed the training and received a card when they start the program. A course will be offered on campus at the start of fall semester. The program director will confirm the date during your program orientation.
  2. Have a physical examination by summer prior to starting the program. (Students will be notified about due dates prior to program orientation)
  3. Have proof of Hepatitis B vaccination or have the series completed by summer prior to starting the program. Students without a valid record of Hepatitis B vaccine series completion must get a blood test (titer) to verify immunity to Hepatitis B. (Students will be notified about due dates prior to program orientation)
  4. Be current/up to date with immunizations (measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, varicella) and 2 PPD skin tests, or a Quantiferon blood test by summer prior to starting the program. Students without a valid immunization record must get blood tests (titers) to verify immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, and varicella. (Students will be notified about due dates prior to program orientation)
  5. Agree to submit to a background check and drug screen by summer prior to starting the program. Students are responsible for the cost of the background check and drug screen (average cost: $ 71.00). (Students will be notified about due dates prior to program orientation)

***Students will upload a copy of their CPR card, physical exam form (given after acceptance to the program), immunization record including Hepatitis B into an electronic tracking system during the summer prior to starting the program.***

Withdraw Your Application

Any candidate wishing to withdraw or cancel their application or postpone admission must provide immediate written communication to the college’s Special Admissions Clerk. Additionally, if you cannot be reached or fail to respond to admissions emails expressing your interest in the program, your name will be withdrawn from the waitlist.
