Allied Health programs have special admissions processes with limited enrollment capacities and high student demand. The top 32 applicants to Health Information Management program will be admitted.

Admissions Pathways for New Applicants

There are three pathways into the HIM bachelor’s degree program depending on your past college credit completion. View all three pathways to find the one that is best for you.

Track 1 - Entering as a Freshman (1st Year)

The first pathway is designed for students admitted to the Health Information Technology two-year associate degree program who are interested in continuing on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management. Students in this track will enter as freshmen.

Applicants to the Associate Degree program will be admitted on a first-come, first-serve basis. In the spring semester of the first-year, students will have the opportunity to apply to the baccalaureate program as a pre-major.

In addition to the required courses for the major students pursuing this track must complete the following requirements in order to complete the bachelor's degree program:

  • CSU or IGETC General Education Pattern
  • Transfer level Math Course
  • Transfer level English Composition Course

In order to proceed into the baccalaureate program students must complete the Health Information Technology Associate Degree Program.

Track 2 - Entering as a Sophomore (2nd Year)

The second pathway is designed for students with previous AS/BS degrees in fields other than Health Information. This track allows students to complete the major requirements (HEIT courses) in 1 year.

Applicants must have completed the following requirements prior to applying to this track:

  • CSU or IGETC General Education Pattern
  • Transfer level Math Course
  • Transfer level English Composition Course
    OR
    Completion of previous college degree (AA/AS/BA/BS)

In order to proceed into the baccalaureate program students must complete the Health Information Technology Associate Degree Program (1 yr).

Track 3 - Entering as a Junior (3rd Year)

The third pathway is designed for students who have completed a two-year program in Health Information Technology, who are interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management. Students in this track will enter directly as juniors.

Students pursuing this track must complete the following requirements prior to earning a bachelor's degree (if they have not already been completed):

  • CSU or IGETC General Education Pattern
  • Transfer level Math Course
  • Transfer level English Composition Course

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered for admission:

  1. Minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.0
  2. Minimum 3.0 G.P.A. in Health Information Technology courses

**It is strongly RECOMMENDED that you complete the RHIT Certification.

Steps to Apply

  1. Apply for Admission to Mesa College

    Not a current Mesa College student? Before you submit an application to any of the Allied Health programs, you will need to apply for admission to Mesa College. Becoming a student is free and easy.

  2. Attend a Program Information Session

    Learn more about what it takes to apply and succeed as a student in the Health Information Management program.

  3. Program Prerequisites

    Two prerequisites are required to apply for the Health Information Management Program (HIM):

    Admission into the Health Information Management program will be pending until each prerequisite is completed. When taking prerequisite courses at another institution, please verify with counseling, before enrollment, that they transfer to Mesa College.

    It is highly recommended that all CSU/IGETC are complete by fall entry into the HIMS program

  4. Complete the Online Program Application

    Submit an online application for the HIM program within the application time period from TBD. Your application should include specified personal information, unofficial transcripts, and your Statements of Interest. For the Statements of Interest you will be asked to provide answers to the following questions:

    1. Why have you chosen to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Management (HIM)?
    2. This program is rigorous and time intensive. What are your plans to incorporate this educational path into the demands of your work schedule and personal commitments?
    3. What are your specific career goals after you obtain your degree and RHIA credential?

    Be sure to fill out and save your documents before uploading as the site will not allow you to save and return.

  5. Submit Your Official Transcripts

    Please submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities that you have attended. Official transcript submission is required for the application process however, evaluation of the official transcripts is not required to be considered a qualified candidate. For more information about transcripts, visit the Transcripts webpage.

    Note: If you have completed your prerequisites at City, Mesa, or Miramar College, you do not need to submit an official transcript. Your transcript will be obtained directly from the SDCCD records office on your behalf.

  6. Update Your Contact Information

    You are responsible for maintaining a current email address with Special Admissions and responding to requests for confirmation of your continued interest in admission into the program sent during the year. Be sure to return each such notice by the stipulated date to maintain the admission status.

What to Expect After You Apply

Once you complete and submit your application, you will be placed on a “qualified applicants” list. Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will NOT be considered. Completion of all designated prerequisites does not guarantee admission. All "qualified applicants" will have their application packet evaluated using a scoring rubric. Candidates may be interviewed. The interviews will include a written exercise.

Withdraw Your Application

Any candidate wishing to withdraw or cancel their application or postpone admission must provide immediate written communication to the college’s Special Admissions Clerk. Additionally, if you cannot be reached or fail to respond to admissions emails expressing your interest in the program, your name will be withdrawn from the waitlist.
