Black Studies Program

As a course of study that seeks to recover and elevate African and Afro-American voices, the Black Studies program at Mesa College provides you with a positive and comprehensive understanding of Black history, culture, contributions, and theory that will empower you to take action in your own community in support of diversity and equity. In Black Studies courses, you will model social justice as you learn about the legacy and importance of civic engagement and take advantage of the program’s service learning and volunteering activities. Courses spanning across the arts, humanities, and social sciences will provide a multidisciplinary approach to your learning to help you better understand Black experiences and psychology from the level of the individual, to the family, to dynamics within our larger political structures and systems. Whether you identify as African, Afro-American, or another identity, your education will prepare you to think critically through the lens of race, gender, ethnicity, class, nationality, religion, and sexual orientation and assist you as you pursue your educational and professional goals.
