Mesa College Opportunity: Teaching Men of Color Online Certificate (FREE) - April 18-22
In support of our ongoing institutional equity planning efforts, San Diego Mesa College has partnered with the Center for Organizational Responsibility and Advancement (CORA) and has made the Teaching Men of Color Certificate Program available FREE OF CHARGE to all Mesa College Faculty, Staff and students (in particular tutors, student leaders, Ambassadors, Peer Navigators etc.) through October 2016.
About the Teaching Men of Color Certificate |
The Center for Organizational Responsibility and Advancement (CORA) has gained widespread attention for its Teaching Men of Color Certificate Program. This program is a week-long, fully online training program designed to enhance the capacity of faculty to support learning in Men of Color. A feature piece came out in Diverse Issues in Higher Ed , along with pieces in Frost Illustrated and Huffington Post.
Who should enroll? |
Individuals who will most benefit from this program include part-time and full-time instructional faculty in community colleges and those responsible for academic program administration (e.g., department chairs, deans, faculty leaders). In addition, university faculty who work with transfer students and high school teachers who educate men of color may also benefit from this program.

Program Modules |
The program includes five-modules (one module, each day). On Days 1, 2, 3, and 4, learners will view module presentations (at your convenience), engage in readings, and virtual discussions on teaching and learning strategies. On Day 3 and 5, learners will participate in a real-time video conference with Drs. Luke Wood and Frank Harris III to further explore how to connect course content with daily practice. Day 1 - Factors necessitating enhanced teaching and learning strategies for men of color
Day 2 - Theoretical and epistemological foundations for teaching men of color
Day 3 - Building relationships with college men of color (live session @ 4pm PST)
Day 4 - Teaching and learning strategies for instructional faculty
Day 5 - *Virtual discussion* (live session @ 4pm PST)
Daily assignments include participating in 1 hour online modules, reading one book chapter and 2-4 articles per night and daily posts.
Mesa College has made the Teaching Men of Color in the Community College: A Guidebook available FREE OF CHARGE to faculty, staff and student leaders who sign up for the certificate. Simply bring a copy of your confirmation email to the Dean of Student Affairs Office, I4-408, the week prior to your session.
