DEIA Dialogue Series - Session 1: Identities and Bias (Flex #21608)

  • Date: Friday, April 26, 2024
  • Time: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM in the LOFT
  • Facilitator: Prof. Joseph Martinez (PHYS)
  • Description: This event will be a faculty lead discussion in which we talk about our identities as faculty members, how our identities intersect with our students identities, and how our bias shows up in the classroom. The discussion will begin with splitting into groups of 4-6 and having a brief introduction to who we are through an ice breaker activity in which we learn how we identify ourselves. Faculty members will be given a worksheet helping them map out their own identities. We will split into pairs to help us get comfortable sharing our identities, then merge into larger groups to continue our sharing, and finish off by sharing as a whole room. The second part of our discussion will be covering how our identities interact with our students identities, how do our students see us, how do we see our students, and how can we use our identities to help our students further. By the end of the discussion the goal is for faculty members to be more comfortable talking about identity and have a concrete way to reaffirm our students identities in the classroom.
