Fossil-Fuel Divestment from Two Perspectives

Mesa Campus

7250 Mesa College Drive
San Diego, CA 92111

TerraMesa, Mesa's student environmental sustainability and conservation club, invites you to “Fossil-Fuel Divestment from Two Perspectives” on Wednesday, December 2nd, at 5pm in I4-213 (2nd floor of the student services building). You can also attend the presentation virtually (please see the instructions below).

Presentation description: Divestment (withdrawing of investment funds) is a topic usually delegated to financial managers. However, from time to time, it can become a means for societal change. It was in the case of South Africa Apartheid, and now is becoming a means for transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The presentation will provide a conceptual model to help interpret the differences between viewing fossil-fuel divestment as a societal matter, and viewing it as a means of reducing financial risk. California has the dominant players in this controversy, and therefore, affects us right here in San Diego. Recent news headlines will be used to illustrate how Fossil-Free Divestment is developing from these two perspectives.

About the speaker: Dwain Deets is a member of SanDiego350’s Community Presentation Team. He represents SanDiego350 at the Climate Change Coalition, a region-wide coordinating body of citizen-based groups, and at the North County Climate Change Alliance. Dwain retired from NASA after 37 years as a flight research engineer. He received a masters in physics from San Diego State. He has lived in Encinitas for 12 years with his wife Cathy.
