Exploring STEAM: Half-Day Faculty Summit
When: October 7th 9:00am - 1:00pm

The Humanities Institute at Mesa College invites you to attend the first Faculty Summit for the new STEAM initiative on campus. STEAM provides a holistic view of the world and the challenges we face, and the ability to tackle a variety of solutions in new ways. With rapidly growing STEM and creative industries and an increasing emphasis on innovation, STEAM dials in to the natural intersections of liberal arts and STEM learning. It is an approach that is gaining momentum in education around the world.
The goals of the STEAM Initiative and this event are to introduce the concept to faculty as a way to explore:
- Opportunities to expand upon the current diversity of programs on campus,
- Deeper student learning at the intersection of the seven schools on campus,
- Cross-department pilot projects that mirror the world of work, and to
- Build a foundation for an ongoing STEAM initiative.
Guests include:
Nate Delson, (Keynote Speaker) serves as a resource for UCSD faculty who are creating experiential course for the new EnVison Maker Studio. For more than sixteen years, Delson has been educating mechanical engineers at UCSD through project-based learning in laboratory settings that combine thinking and making.
Sheena Ghanbari, Program Promotions Manager, UC San Diego Visual Arts, “Integration of the Arts in STEM: A Collective Case Study of Two Interdisciplinary University Programs”
Heather Lattimer, Associate Professor, University of San Diego School of Leadership and Education Sciences and Founder of San Diego Teacher Academy K-12
Judit Hersko, Associate Professor, CSU San Marcos School of Arts, installation artist who has done many collaborative exhibitions with scientists around the world.
Lunch will be served and seating is limited.
