Cultural Unity Week - 'Race: The Power of an Illusion'
Race: The Power of an Illusion, a documentary produced by California Newsreel, in association with the Independent Television Service. Major funding was through the Ford Foundation and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Diversity Fund. The Philadelphia Inquirer has said of this film, “One of the most honest and compelling documentaries I’ve ever seen on race and its impact on this nation.”
The 3-hour film will be shown a Mesa College in H-117/118 in 3 segments on Monday afternoon, from 1 - 3 p.m., Tuesday evening 6 - 8 p.m. and Wednesday evening 6-8 p.m. The film “challenges one of our most fundamental beliefs that humans come divided into a few distinct biological groups.” The first episode will explore the contemporary science having to do with the genetics of so-called ‘race’ and will challenge many of our assumptions about how we as a society categorize human groups. Everyone is welcomed to attend. Each episode of the film will run for approximately 56 min. and will be close captioned.
Discussion will take place immediately following the film, facilitated by Professor Judy Sundayo, EXT. 2793, [email protected]. FLEX credit will be available
