Timeline

1960s

  • Mesa opened in 1964 with an enrollment of 1,400 students.
  • Mesa offered 25 programs including Medical and Dental Assisting, Typing, Fine Arts, and even Airline Services.
  • Three were campus clubs and activities, including athletics.
  • The "Olympians" football team won three conference titles in the 1960's

1970s

  • Mesa began the 1970s with campus activism, a visit from Jane Fonda, and the establishment of the Chicano Studies and Black Studies programs.
  • We also established a counseling department and the child development center.
  • The Mesa College Foundation - and the World Arts Collection was founded.
  • Mesa alumni Arnie Robinson took gold at the 1976 Olympic games, and Drama student Annette Bening went on to become an award-winning actor.
  • Artillery Dr. was renamed Mesa College Dr.

1980s

  • The 1980s were a colorful time at Mesa.
  • Mesa hosted the first Golden Scissors Fashion Show and the first "Festival of Colors", highlighting cultural and ethnic groups across campus.
  • The "Mesa Study Abroad" program kicked off.
  • Campus life was thriving, and innovative new programs in science and technology were offered.
  • Mesa enrollment hit nearly 25,000 students, with hundreds of graduates participating in the new Transfer Admission program.

1990s

  • The 1990s saw a lot of growth and a famous visitor at Mesa College.
  • Mesa College Humanities Institute opened as a regional center of the California Humanities Project, which hosted local and world-renowned musicians, artists, dramatists, and other campus performances.
  • New building included the Animal Health Technology center, Student Services Center, and Learning Resource Center.
  • Rosa Parks visited Mesa College on her 79th birthday with two subsequent visits in the following three years.
  • Constance M. Carroll was appointed as president of Mesa College.

2000s

  • In the 2000's, Props S and N are approved, providing millions in funding for building renovation and renewal.
  • Mesa gets a new Humanities building and Allied Health building.
  • The historic Merrill Douglas Football Stadium receives a dramatic "face-lift".
  • Mesa begins offering winter intersession between fall and spring, and sees enrollment in the thousands.
  • Mesa became San Diego's leading transfer institution, with the most graduates accepted to SDSU.

2010s

  • In the 2010's, Mesa's Campus Renaissance continued with the completion on the new Student Services Center, the Math+Science Complex, the Social and Behavioral Science Building, the Exercise Science Center, and a new Mesa Commons.
  • Mesa dedicated the Rosa Parks Transit Station.
  • We opened the new Center for Business and Technology, and the Renovated Fine Arts Building, featuring the Mesa Art Gallery.
  • Mesa made history by offering the first community-college based four-year bachelor's degree in Health Information Management.
  • An inaugural group of high school graduates enrolled at Mesa and received free tuition - thanks to the San Diego Promise Program.
  • Mesa doubled down on its commitment to Equity and Excellence by opening The Stand - our food and clothing pantry dedicated to addressing basic needs.

2020s

  • In the 2020's, Mesa College adapted to Covid-19 by converting classes to online, and achievement ceremonies, such as Commencement and the Scholarship Awards - in virtual and drive-thru format.
  • Mesa is recognized as Hispanic Serving institution, an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution, and a Military Friendly School.
  • Mesa earned multiple Equity Awards as well as the Devore Trophy for the 4th time, which celebrates student-athlete achievement.
  • Mesa continued out commitment to inclusion with the opening of the Dreamers Center, the FAST Center, the Pride Center and the Veterans Center.
  • The Mesa Quad was completed, tying our campus together and achieving our goal of creating welcoming and safe spaces for all Mesa students.
