San Diego, CA. — On Wednesday, May 26th, San Diego Mesa College will honor the scholarship winners during their 30th Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony on campus. 236 scholarships worth nearly $160,000 total, will be awarded to 168 students – with many students winning multiple awards.
This year, Mesa College will be celebrating 30 years of providing scholarships to students. Mesa’s first Awards Ceremony was held in 1993, however, as early as 1976, Dr. Ruth Kern began selling used books outside the campus library to fund scholarships. Since then, the San Diego Mesa College Foundation has grown to serve hundreds of students each year, providing innovative learning opportunities, enrichment through the arts, and support for basic needs.
“This awards ceremony shines light on Mesa College’s commitment to equity and excellence for our students,” stated Mesa College President Dr. Ashanti Hands. “Our generous donors – consisting of faculty, staff, alumni, community partners and students themselves – continue to come forward to support the success of our students.”
Donations made in honor of this year’s 30th Anniversary will go to benefit the Mesa College Spirit of Olympia Fund. This fund brings stability, effectiveness, and innovation to our mission by giving our Foundation the flexibility to use funds to students’ greatest needs each year. The Ceremony begins with a “Donor Meet & Greet” and no-host social hour, continues with the recognition of donors and recipients, and concludes with dancing and socializing. The event is hosted by Mesa College and the Mesa College Foundation.
