This season, several San Diego Mesa College athletic teams made it to the California
Community College Athletic Association playoffs.
The women’s volleyball team made it to the first round of the CCCAA Women’s Indoor
Volleyball SoCal Regional Championships, where they were defeated by Golden West College
on Nov. 22 0-3. The team was ranked as the 18 seed on Nov. 18 at the end of regular
season play for the state, and they had a winning record of 7-3 for regular season
play in the Pacific Coast South division, and 15-11 overall.
Outside hitter and Mesa College sophomore Isabel Miller was honored as an All-Southern
California Region player of the year for the 2016 season.
The men’s soccer team (8-4-9) traveled to Oxnard College for an away game on Nov.
19, where they were defeated by the defending CCCAA state champions 2-0.
Mesa’s women’s soccer team has become the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Southern
Division Champion for the fourth season in a row. The team traveled to San Bernardino
Valley Nov. 19 for the Southern California Regional playoffs, where they were defeated
0-1.
The women’s water polo team, who were the 2015 State Champions, had a record of 7-3
for the Pacific Coast division, and a record of 13-10 overall. The team took on Orange
Coast College in a playoff game Nov. 10, losing 11-5.
During the Southern California Cross Country Championships on Nov. 4, Mesa’s women’s
team came in 24th place for the 5k team scores.
Cross country runner Kristina Tovilovic came in 52nd place (20:32.1), Erica Edwards
came in 107th place (22:18.2), Jasmine Perez came in 150th place (24:29.6), Jasmine
Ruvalcaba came in 152nd place (24:46.9) and Danielle Westerlind came in 159th place
(25:14.9) during the meet.
In the SCCCC men’s 4-mile run on Nov. 4, Mesa runner Cesar Palomares came in 110th
place (22:47.3), John Lopez came in 134th place (23:22.4) and Mong Ng came in 166th
place (24:20.2).
During the CCCAA State Championships cross country race on Nov. 19, sophomore Tovilovic
came in 75th place out of 199 runners with a time of 20:19.1, averaging 6:33.3 per
mile.
The men’s water polo team came in third place with a record of 6-4 for the pacific
coast division and 16-12 overall.
Mesa’s football team finished the season with a 1-4 record for the American Mountain
division and a 3-7 record overall.
Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams are gearing up for regular season play.
The men’s team will participate in the San Diego Mesa College Invitational on Dec.
28 at 12 p.m., with their first game against Santa Ana, followed by an official home
opening game versus Cuyamaca at 5 p.m. on Jan. 20. The women’s team will play their
first home game versus Mt. San Jacinto Jan. 6 at 5 p.m.
