San Diego Mesa College’s Communication Studies Department invites students, faculty
and staff to mingle during this semester’s Common Grounds event at MC 211 A/B on Thursday,
Nov. 3 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Each semester for the past three years, the department encourages the campus to meet
on “common grounds” with conversation, coffee and cookies to make connections and
find out more about the experiences of others on campus. In addition to cookies and
coffee, attendees can be entered to win prizes if they have handed out cards to invite
others to the event.
Communication Studies Professor Veronica Gerace, EdD said that the purpose of Common
Grounds is “to build the sense of community that tends to be missing in a community
college environment.”
In the past, attendees have built friendships and had the opportunity to talk to their
professors and the administration – such as Larry Maxey, Dean of Student Success and
Equity. Gerace said that before creating Common Grounds, students had expressed a
need for more social events on campus to make the sort of connections that happen
“more organically” at four-year colleges.
“Too often, I think that people focus on the differences, but I think if people really
focused more on the fact that we have more in common than we have differences, then
we would have more friendships and a better sense of community on campus,” Gerace
said.
The event is sponsored by the Department of Student Success and Equity. For more information,
