  • Mesa College Unveils Permanent Display based on San Diego Kelp Forests

    San Diego, C.A. – An interdisciplinary collaboration of scientific expertise and artistry has resulted in a visually stunning interpretive display in the hallway of the 3rd floor of the MS Building. Led by biology professor Paul Detwiler, the production team included Jenny Armer, Museum Studies ILT in the Department of Fine Art, and Museum Studies students Gaby Espina and Sara Shah. Together, they created realistic models of marine species while also including specimens from the biology department’s teaching collections to represent a microcosm of undersea life.

  • Mira Mesa artist Andrew Alcasid brings Victorian home to life with 'Flowers and Fields'

    For his latest exhibition “Flowers & Fields,” Mira Mesa artist Andrew Alcasid opted to ditch the familiar “white cube gallery” for a nontraditional exhibition space: an 1896 Queen Anne Victorian home. “I’m looking at every surface — of wall space, and also windows — and seeing what can fit,” Alcasid, 34, says. “If there’s a blank wall, that’s them asking for some work. (The house) is just a blank canvas.”

  • Mesa College Drive-In: An Outdoor Art Exhibition

    Art has a lot to say these days, and from November 13th to December 9th, 36 California artists will be adding their voices to the mix to memorialize the dramatic events of the past eight months in the socially distanced Mesa College Drive-In: An Outdoor Art Exhibition (open Monday-Friday from 8am-4pm, excluding school holidays). This free, unique exhibition will give visitors the opportunity to reflect on artwork from the safety of their cars as they drive through the outdoor display located in Lot 1 on Mesa College’s campus. Curated by the San Diego Mesa College Museum Studies class, the art pieces capture the turmoil of the 2020 “new normal,” and provide commentary on the effects of global illness, social unrest, and destructive wildfires.
