Writing Center Mission Statement
The mission of the Mesa College Writing Center is to promote students’ confidence in their practice of writing processes and critical thinking, and to support faculty across the campus in teaching writing in their disciplines.
Students should keep the following points in mind when visiting the writing center:
1. Student should come prepared with the assignment (prompt). At the beginning of a tutoring session, tutors will ask students to see the prompt, so that they have an idea of how to help the students.
2. Students should not expect to get their papers “fixed” or edited. The writing center shares the minimalist tutoring philosophy. Minimalist tutoring strengthens reading and writing skills by asking students to practice under the supervision of a more experienced writer (the tutor), who acts as a coach rather than an editor.
3. Students should expect to work with tutors for at least 20 minutes. If there are no other students, tutors may work with students for a longer period. Students may not get all their questions addressed in one sessions; however, students are encouraged to come back and come often to take advantage of our services.
