Writing Center Mission Statement

The Mesa College Writing Center supports the mission of the California Community Colleges as expressed in the San Diego Mesa College mission statement. We do that by providing a support service that helps students succeed, namely tutoring in writing for any Mesa College students who desire assistance with improving their writing or need help with producing successful responses to course writing assignments. The Writing Center promotes student success by providing one-on-one and small-group tutoring in writing for any course at any level by trained tutors under the direction of faculty specialists in writing and tutoring.

The tutors and faculty who operate the Writing Center strive to enhance the quality of education in an atmosphere of mutual support that increases student retention by serving as a safety net for those in academic need. Students who come to the Writing Center for tutoring increase their chance for academic success at Mesa College and beyond—not just from the tutorial assistance they receive but also from the specific rhetorical skills and general study skills they acquire.

A secondary mission of the Writing Center is to provide student tutors the opportunity to refine and extend their academic skills beyond the classroom. The experience they gain as tutors is especially beneficial to those who are considering teaching careers in higher education or further study at the graduate level.

Where is the Writing Center located?

We are located in K210A, next door to the Math and Science Center and the Tutoring Appointment Center.

Who can use the Writing Center?

We are here as a free service for all Mesa students. Click on the "Services" link for details.

Will I need to set up an appointment?

While some students come for "walk-in" tutoring, we recommend scheduling an appointment. More and more students are discovering how the Writing Center can help them become better writers, and we only have so many tutors available each hour. To request a tutoring appointment, simply consult our open hours schedule above, then click on the email link right above them, and request an appointment at least one non-weekend day prior to the appointment time and day you are requesting.

Online Tutoring

The Writing Center is closed for the summer.  Online tutoring hours will resume in the fall semester and are available during the Writing Center's hours. Click here to access.
