Credit for Military Experience
San Diego Mesa College is guided by the recommendations of the American Council on Education in granting undergraduate credit toward the bachelor's degree for military service.
To obtain credit for military service, you must be fully matriculated, be enrolled at the university, and submit a SMARTS or AARTS transcript, Form DD-214 or DD-295 to:

College Credit Options
San Diego Mesa College offers several credit opportunities, including credit for military service/training and passing scores on the College Board Advanced Placement examination, selected College-Level Examination Program tests and Chauncy Group International - DSST Program tests (formerly known as DANTES Subject Standardized Tests). Students may also challenge courses by taking examinations at San Diego Mesa College. A total of 30 units will be allowed for credit earned through examination. Credit for Non-collegiate Instruction:
Academic credit may also be available to currently enrolled SDCCD students for skills or knowledge not obtained by formal scholastic experience or for prior course work with content determined equivalent to district courses.
Academic Credit for Military Service:
San Diego Mesa College is guided by the recommendations of the American Council on Education in granting undergraduate credit toward the bachelor's degree for military service. All credit awards are lower-division credit. Postgraduate credit is not granted.
To obtain credit for military service, you must be fully matriculated, be enrolled at the University, and submit one of the following: AARTS or SMARTS transcript, Form DD-214, or DD-295. San Diego Mesa College does not award credit for MOS ratings.
Credit for Advanced Placement Examinations:
San Diego Mesa College grants credit toward its undergraduate degrees for passing scores on the Advanced Placement Program exams. Detailed information. Official score reports should be mailed to The San Diego Community College District Office at 3375 Camino del Rio South, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92108-3883.
Students who present scores of 3 or better may be granted college credit. Information about the Advanced Placement Credit awards can be found at the Evaluations Office located in the Student Services Building, I4-306.
Credit by Examination:
Students may challenge courses by taking examinations developed at San Diego Mesa College. Up to 30 units will be awarded to those who pass the examinations successfully. The grade(s) earned (including a grade of "F") will be used in the San Diego Mesa College grade point calculations. At the discretion of the department, a grade of Credit/No Credit may be awarded instead of a letter grade; a maximum of 15 total Credit units may be applied toward an undergraduate degree.
If you are interested in applying for credit-by-examination, contact the appropriate department(s) since each department has the option of excluding any or all of its courses from credit by examination or of setting special conditions on the student requesting this option. Approval to receive undergraduate credit-by-examination is granted at the discretion of the appropriate college authorities and under certain conditions listed in the General Catalog.
Credit for College-Level Examination Program (CLEP):
The college grants credit for selected CLEP examinations in which a minimum computer based testing score of 50 has been received.

Veterans, Active Duty Military and Dependents
San Diego Mesa College values its veterans, active duty military and dependent students. We will do everything in our means to assist you as you embark on an exciting academic career with us.
New students obtain, complete and submit the Application for Admission at the Admissions Office, MV 11 or online at http://studentweb.sdccd.edu
All first time veterans and/or dependants receiving educational benefits must attend a mandatory VA orientation within 90 days of the first semester. If a VA orientation is not attended all benefits will be terminated effective the first day of the semester.

All official transcripts of prior college work and military schools, including copies of form DD214, Smart Transcript or DD2685 covering all periods of military service, must be on file in the Records Office by the end of the first semester of attendance at this college. Certification for benefits for the second semester will be withheld if transcripts are not received. Visit the Veterans' Affairs Office (MV- 7) for necessary forms.

Consist with the state law The San Diego Community College District offers two years of priority registration to Active Duty Military and Veterans discharged within the past two years. To receive this priority, students must contact the Residency Office ( MV- 10) and provide a military ID card or DD214 for verification.
Active Duty Students call to service away from San Diego
Active duty military who have been deployed away from their installation during their course of studies may submit a letter requesting a late withdrawal due to military obligation with a copy of military orders or a letter from a commanding officer. This request can be submitted as soon as military orders are available or at your convenience upon return from military obligation.
Active Duty Military and Dependents
Active duty military personnel are eligible for a nonresident tuition fee waiver if the military member is stationed on active duty in California on or before the starting date of the semester. The nonresident tuition fee exception will be effective until the student's continuous enrollment ends
Dependents of active duty military personnel are eligible for a nonresident tuition fee waiver if the military member is stationed on active duty in California on or before the residency determination date. The nonresident tuition fee exception will be effective until the student's continuous enrollment ends.
Discharged Military Personnel
Recently discharged military personnel may be eligible to receive a residency status exception for one year from the date of discharge, retirement, etc. Students who wish to have their residency status re-classified will need to contact the Residency office at (619) 388-2688 for additional information.
Number of Units Required
For students enrolled in a degree program, the following number of units are required each Fall and Spring semester each semester to qualify for educational and training allowance:
- 12 units or more (full allowance)
- 9 - 11 1/2 units (three-fourths allowance)
- 6 - 8 1/2 units (one-half allowance)
- 2 - 5 1/2units (one-quarter allowance*)
*Chapters 32 and 106 only.
Short-term and Summer session courses are computed proportionately for payment purposes. Please contact Veterans Affairs Office for details.
Withdrawal/Change of Classes
Veterans are required to notify the campus Veterans Affairs Office when they stop attending class, withdraw from the college, or add or drop a class. Such changes should be reported immediately after completing the add/drop procedure through Online Registration. Failure to comply with this regulation will be grounds for decertification.
Veterans Academic Progress
A veteran student on Academic or Lack of Progress probation status will be disqualified when his/her grade point average (GPA) falls below 2.0 for two consecutive semesters. The College Veterans Affairs Office is required to notify the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) of this status. The DVA will terminate benefits unless it can be shown that the student is pursuing an appropriate objective and has a reasonable chance for success in the chosen program. Please contact the Veterans Affairs Office for more information.
Veterans may not receive benefits for a repeat of a course in which a grade of "A," "B," "C," "D," or "CR" has already been earned. Although District policy allows a student to repeat a course in which a "D" grade has been received; the course may be certified for benefits only if this catalog states that a grade of "C" or better in that course is required to earn a degree or meet a prerequisite.
The veteran assumes full liability for any overpayment of veteran benefits.
All persons receiving educational benefits must report to the Veterans Affairs Office after enrollment every semester to continue their benefits. In addition, a Student Educational Plan (SEP) must be on file by the end of the first semester. This plan must be developed and reviewed by a counselor. Veterans with disabilities are encouraged to pursue services offered through Disabled Students Programs and Services.
Veterans may be approved for Work Experience classes only if work experience is required in their major or if they have electives available according to their education plan. Work Experience 270 must be taken concurrently with Work Experience 271 but must not exceed four units per semester or a total of 16 units.
