Laura received her B.A. in Physiology from University of California, Berkeley, and her M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling with Deaf Emphasis from San Diego State University. and she is a C.R.C. Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (National Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification). Her personal accomplishments include being a social advocate, accomplished grant writer and resource developer, and career/employment counselor for over six years. Laura cofounded the San Diego Coalition on Alcohol, Other Drugs and Disability. She is considered culturally competent and bilingual in American Sign Language.
Ms. Mathis has been Placement Officer at the Mesa College Career Center since 1994 and has also served as an adjunct counselor. She has had extensive experience in all aspects of her profession, including grant writing, curriculum development, career planning, assessment, and CalWorks. She regularly organizes and presents workshops on careers and employment and teaches Personal Growth classes. She has worked with disabled students --especially the deaf--for several years and is a proficient signer. Ms., Mathis has been an active member of the community , having collaborated with a number of agencies. She brings varied talents to our counseling program.
