The School of Behavioral/Social Sciences and Multicultural Studies is the second largest School at Mesa College and provides instruction in a diverse array of disciplines. We offer courses, majors, and programs in Anthropology, Architecture, Black Studies, Building Construction Technology, Chicano/a Studies, Filipino Studies, Geography, History, Interior Design, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Women's Studies.

We remain dedicated to offering our students the highest quality lower-division education, as attested to by the basic goals endorsed by the Dean, Chairs, and faculty of the School, and synopsized below.
We endeavor to serve the needs of all our students, including those intending to transfer to four-year institutions, those who are focusing on vocational training or re-training, and those life-long learners seeking courses and programs of general interest.
We aspire always to excellence in teaching. The delivery of quality instruction involves honest self-reflection, and maintaining and improving upon scholarly competence. To these ends we will regularly evaluate the teaching performance of tenured/tenure-track and adjunct faculty, encourage scholarship, and participate in available opportunities for professional growth and development.
We will consistently review the design and integrity of the programs and courses offered in our School, seeking always to improve and refine our efforts. Our School has developed, implemented, and periodically reviews a set of goals and objectives in every discipline and program. We will continue to integrate recommendations from program reviews into action plans to improve instruction.
We will continue to gather and study student equity and enrollment data, and utilize them in pursuing the most effective staffing patterns for our programs, which will include our seeking to recruit and appoint additional tenure-track faculty from a diverse pool of applicants. Students benefit directly when tenured/tenure-track professionals constitute the majority of a College's faculty. Tenured faculty write and revise curriculum, meet and consult with students, and participate in numerous shared-governance activities that serve to keep the many campus systems at Mesa College alive and vital. Tenured faculty also have contractual and professional duties of peer review which are their exclusive responsibility. Our current ratio of tenured/tenure track to adjunct faculty is unfavorable: we will do all that we can to improve it.
We will participate in formal planning processes, in recognition of the fact that complex, effective systems need to be in operational order to support teaching and learning. We will support ongoing planning, including participating in the design and planning of the class schedule, and identifying ways to distribute funds needed to support the college infrastructure.
We value our connections to our local community, and to the national and global networks that surround us. We will continue to nurture and strengthen existing relationships, and we will work to develop and sustain new relationships, ultimately promoting a deeper public understanding of our mission to encourage the life-long pursuit of learning as a social good.
