Coach Shirk has been part of the volleyball community in San Diego for 32 years having started playing volleyball as a freshman at Monte Vista High School in Spring Valley. After graduating from Monte Vista he went on to play volleyball at Grossmont College under then coach Fred Featherstone. After completing his All California sophomore season, John accepted a position on Colleen Suwara’s staff with the Grossmont College women’s team. With the Lady Griffins, coach Shirk was part of 6 Pacific Coast Conference championships, going to 1 State Championship tournament. After 8 seasons with the Lady Griffins which included 2 seasons as Fred’s assistant with the men, Coach Shirk moved to Mark Warner’s staff with the Aztecs of San Diego State University women’s volleyball where he would spend the next 12 years. During his time with the Aztecs John was part of 2 NCAA tournament teams.
John has been coaching with Club Pacific Girl’s Volleyball Club for the past 22 years and has had great success in developing young players for the next level.
Coach Shirk is looking forward to helping Head Coach Jaime Lopez develop the San Diego Mesa men’s volleyball program into a consistent state level competitive program, while at the same time developing players and people for their next level.
Head Coach, Jamie Lopez, was born and raised in Baja California (Mexicali.) After being raised in Mexico, Jaime had the opportunity to come to the United States where he grew and developed as a player and coach. His coaching experience ranges from high school to college. He is grateful for the opportunity to serve as the Head Coach at San Diego Mesa College. He is committed to growing and strengthening the Men's Volleyball program through active recruitment, quality coaching and team building. It is his dream to alter the pathway and create a competitive team that not only competes well throughout the season but poses a threat during the postseason.
At the collegiate level, Jamie has coached Grossmont College for the past seven years. During his tenure as assistant coach at Grossmont, the Men's Volleyball team competed in two State Championship Finals. In addition to coaching at the collegiate level with the men's team, Jaime was an assistant with Grossmont College's women's team (2012-2013.) While with the women's team, Grossmont won two conference championships (2012-2013) and made a State Finals appearance (2013.) Jaime has also coached high school and club teams. He coached varsity volleyball at Sweetwater and Coronado high schools as well as junior varsity at Monte Vista High School. He has coached club volleyball at Seaside, Coast, East Valley and ECVBA.
Jaime has extensive experience as both an indoor and outdoor player. He has been playing for 28 years as a setter for teams in Baja where he was won three National Championships. In the United States, he played for two years at Grossmont College, earning "First Team All Pacific Coast Conference" both seasons. As a beach player, Jaime has also earned distinction by winning the famous Estero Beach Volleyball tournament and Baja Open. He has also represented the Mexican National Beach Volleyball team in the North Central and Caribbean (NORCECA) region International Tournament.
As a respected young coach, Jaime brings a passion for volleyball and commitment to building the team in the gym each and every day.
