B. S., M.S., University of North Carolina at Wilmington
Mr. Alan Bass, Assistant Professor, is in the Department of Mathematics. He received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences and a Master of Science in Mathematics, both from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Right from the beginning in his undergraduate career at UNC, Alan served as a Volunteer Program Coordinator; where he planned and facilitated community service programs as well as recruited new volunteers. It was at this point that his goal of seeking a teaching career became evident.
Alan's teaching experience is concentrated in San Diego County. For the past two years, he has taught Mathematics at San Diego City College covering our developmental courses, as well as Statistics, Trigonometry and Secondary Education Math. During the same period, he has taught courses at Cuyamaca College from developmental courses through Business and standard calculus. He has also been engaged in the Tutor Training Program at CC. And for the past year, Alan has taught developmental Math courses at Southwestern College including the administration of self-paced courses.
Mr. Bass brings many strengths to Mesa including a keen understanding of pedagogy at the developmental level of Mathematics where a large proportion of students face difficulties and anxieties. He approaches students by first using diagnostic techniques to assess the students' level of ability as well as barriers to learning. It is with this knowledge that Alan will outline his instructional techniques and emphasize study skills and organization in student learning.
Alan also brings strong technology skills to the classroom. He is skilled in using technology including Maple, Mathcad, Minitab and of course, graphing calculators. Additionally, Alan has been an active contributor to the shared governance process by serving on the Academic Master Plan, Algebra Review, Joint Curriculum Review Committees.
