Careers

The destination and event business is a division of the tourism industry that encompasses the travel arena and is also prominent in business marketing and promotions. The $100-billion industry currently employs 1.5 million people who plan events, meetings, conventions and trade shows. They coordinate the facilities- hotels, convention centers, multi-use stadiums and other event and meeting sites. Also needed are the suppliers, convention service contractors, audiovisual firms, transportation and destination management companies, rental-equipment providers, entertainers, floral and decor companies, and other organizations that provide services.

The destination and event business is dynamic-no day in the life of an event professional is ever the same. Work activities could include a new product introduction, a walk-a-thon for a charitable society, or a local blues festival.

Events usually are made special by the incorporation of entertainment or special effects. Types of public events are many- celebrations, parades, and ceremonies. Corporate events include product promotions, cocktail parties, gala dinners, and conference opening and closing proceedings. Sporting events have become more than just a game with the addition of opening pageantries, half-time entertainment, and grand finale productions. Private events include such celebrations as birthday parties, weddings, anniversaries, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, and community and cultural festivals.

Career options are varied and include positions in group organization, sales and marketing, visitor services, tour guiding, corporate travel and meeting departments, destination management companies, or trade and industry associations. If you like to organize events, plan functions, coordinate logistics, and have an affinity for detail, this is the industry segment for you.
