- B.A., M.A., San Diego State University
Ms. Michelle A. (Toni) Parsons joined the Department of Mathematics as a new assistant professor specializing in Developmental Mathematics, effective Fall 2005 Semester. Toni began her academic career at the California Polytechnic Institute in Pomona studying Civil Engineering. She subsequently changed to Math and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from San Diego State University. She then continued her education and earned a Master of Arts degree in Pure Mathematics, also from SDSU. Toni's teaching experiences span SDSU and local community colleges. She is professionally affiliated with the American Mathematical Association, the Golden Key National Honor Society and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
At SDSU, Toni served as first a graduate teaching assistant and then a lecturer teaching a wide variety of courses including Applied Calculus, Linear Algebra and some lower level courses. Prior to her teaching duties at the university, Toni served as a tutor in the Mesa's Tutoring Center for close to two years. Working under the guidance of Professor Bill Peters, Toni tutored students at all math levels as well as some in chemistry and physics. Re-joining Mesa College in 2002, now as an adjunct Math instructor, Toni has successfully taught developmental mathematics courses ranging from Fundamentals of Math through Prealgebra, Beginning and Intermediate Algebra. She has also been effective in teaching our sequence of math courses for elementary school teachers.
Ms. Parsons believes in a direct approach to learning mathematics by allowing students to learn in a wide variety of methods such as pattern blocks, Cuisenaire rods and other manipulatives. Toni expresses significant patience and a deep knowledge of Math through her academic training in Pure Mathematics; both essential requirements for a successful developmental Math instructor. She is skilled in a number of technologies including modeling and Maple software and has considerable experience with a wide variety of manipulatives used to help student learning. She is keenly aware of the needs of students with a variety of learning and physical abilities and has demonstrated commitment to their success. Ms. Parsons is a highly trained and passionate teacher and brings a unique commitment to the success of our students.
