COMMENCEMENT FACTS: Mesa College’s 49th graduating class is comprised of 1,046 students who will receive 1,110 academic degrees and certificates. 480 graduates are men, and 680 – or 58 percent -- are women. 22 students will graduate with two or more degrees and 424 graduate students with honors. The class of 2013 includes 21 valedictorians who achieved the rare and perfect grade point average of 4.0. Among the largest community colleges in California and the nation, San Diego Mesa College was named last year as the fastest-growing community college in California, and the seventh fastest-growing in the nation by Community College Week.
2013 Distinguished Alumna is San Diego artist Miya Hannan, Mesa Class of 2001. Formerly a medical professional in Japan, Miya enrolled at Mesa in 2000 to find her passion and a new career, which she found by taking art classes. As an artist, Miya works on installation, sculpture, and paintings. Miya is represented by R.B. Stevenson Gallery in La Jolla, which this spring featured her solo exhibition “Layers and Missing Links.” She also teaches art at the University of San Diego and Grossmont College.
Student speaker is Jessica Alice Crafton, 30, is a military wife, mother of two, and a passionate volunteer. She is graduating from San Diego Mesa College with two associate degrees, in History and Psychology. She was active in the honors club and Psi Beta, the national honor society for Psychology students -- all while being a Little League mom and a military wife ambassador.
