Suggestions for Citing Articles
(MLA Style)
Based on:
Gibaldi, Joseph. MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. 6 th ed. New York: Modern
Language Association of America, 2003.
Use the following format:
Author. "Article Title." Journal Title. Volume. Issue (year): pagination or length.
Database name. Online service. Name of Library. Access date <URL>.
Component parts of the citation are as follows:
- Author: The author( s) of the article. If no author is given, the article title should be given first.
- Article Title: The title of the article, in quotation marks.
- Journal Title: The title of the journal in which the article was published. The journal title
should be underlined.
- Volume. Issue (Year): If only the date is provided, give the full date and leave out the
parentheses.
- Pagination: Give the beginning and ending pages (e. g., 45-49). If only the starting page is
provided, give the page number followed by a plus sign (e. g., 117+). If no pagination is
provided, give the article length in number or words or paragraphs (e. g., 15 pars.).
- Database Name (if known): Underline the name of the database in which you found the article
(e. g., Academic Search Elite) but do not underline the period following the title.
- Online Service: The name of the online service (e. g., "ProQuest" or "EBSCOhost").
- Name of Library: Include a city, state abbreviation, or both, if useful (e. g. "San Diego Mesa College
Lib.")
- Access Date: The date you accessed the article.
- URL of the Service's Home Page (if known): Enclose in angle brackets.
