School of PE/Health Education and Athletics Dean Dave Evans has been elected as the third Vice President of the National Association of Collegiate NATYCAA, the only professional organization that represents all two year institutions of higher education in the United States. The organization is dedicated to the continuing growth and development of two year college athletics. Dean Evans will serve a four-year commitment, taking the reigns as President in 2009.

Bonnie ZoBell, Professor of English, and Creative Writing Coordinator, was a recipient of a mentorship during July 2006 and worked with Dorothy Allison, New York Times bestseller and author of Bastard out of Carolina. The mentorship program was through the Tin House Conference in Portland, Oregon.

Becca Arnold, Assistant Professor, Economics, and Joe Toto, Associate Professor, Chemistry, were named @ONE Scholars for the 2006-07 year. They were among 10 individuals selected from 60 candidates. The @ONE Scholar program supports research on using technology to improve student learning techniques in the California Community Colleges. Faculty members conduct research in their own classrooms, using a research approach that emphasizes the scholarship of teaching and learning as it relates to technology. December 2006 is the release date for College Counseling Sourcebook: Advice and Strategies from Experienced School Counselors (College Board, 2004). Counselor and Professor Ailene Crakes served on the 2006 editorial advisory board for the College Board's National Office of Community College Initiatives. The Sourcebook provides student service professionals with information and resources to serve community college students whose goal is to transfer to a four-year college or university and complete the baccalaureate degree. The Sourcebook relies on advice and counsel supplied by experienced community college counselors, transfer center directors, and other student service professionals. Like its College Board counterpart for high school counselors, College Counseling Sourcebook incorporates the latest research identifying programs and best practices that effectively serve community college students and counselors. The book is currently available for pre-order. President Rita M. Cepeda sits on the College Board Advisory Panel.

Accolades for Bridges Scholars

Bridges to the Baccalaureate scholar Anh Pham presented a poster of the research she conducted in biochemistry at UCSD at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students. This past summer, Anh was recognized as being the most outstanding scholar of the entire program. The research being accepted for the ABRCMS conference is yet another acknowledgement of the high standards she has achieved because of her dedication to science. Bridges co-chair, Psychology Professor Jaye Van Kirk, also informs us that Pierre Valdez and Melissa Sandoval have had their research in bioengineering and neuroscience accepted for a poster presentation at the Society for the Advancement of Chicano and Native American Scientists (SACNAS) conference in October 2006. And lastly, Traci Hornsby Tallman and Melissa Ibarra have been notified that their research in biochemistry at UCSD was accepted for an oral presentation at ABRCMS in November 2006.

"We are delighted that they will be representing San Diego Mesa College," said Van Kirk in a campus-wide announcement. "These students have expressed their dedication to advancing themselves through scientific research. Your support of our scholars and the Bridges to the Baccalaureate program have helped to make these achievements possible. The ABRCMS and SACNAS conferences provide opportunities for the best and the brightest scholars in science across the nation to share their research with the scientific community."
