Dr. Shi earned a B.A. degree in English Literature from Lanzhou University in Lanzhou, China; an M.A. in Journalism from the Graduate School, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, China; and a Ph.D. in Communications from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

Since 1997, Dr. Shi has been an adjunct instructor of Chinese at Mesa College and has taught all levels of Chinese offered. Since 1993, she has held a similar position at the University of San Diego, and since 1996 at Palomar College as well. Her responsibilities in these institutions have included creating and revising curricula, developing and working with Study Abroad programs, student advising and assessment, and assisting in language laboratories. She is familiar with the particular problems that both heritage and non-heritage speakers face and she is experienced with the special needs of a widely diverse student population. Teaching the culture of the target language group is inherent in foreign language instruction, and Dr. Shi incorporates many different resources, including special software programs, to ensure that her students have as rich an experience as possible. She has also written texts and workbooks for learning Chinese, including Speak in a Week and Conversational Chinese 400. In 2002-2003, she received an award for Instructional Excellence from the SDCCD Honors Program.

Since 2003, Dr. Shi has been a Language Consultant for Penton Overseas, Inc., which is located in Carlsbad. Earlier in her career, she was a producer of Chinese language radio programs for the BBC in London, which required writing, editing, translating, and reviewing news coverage, and prior to that, she was a journalist for The People’s Daily, the largest newspaper in China.
