Ashanti earned an M.A. degree in Education with an emphasis in Counseling from San Diego State University and a B.A. degree in Sociology with a minor in Ethnic Studies from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Since 1998, Ms. Hands held the position of Dean, Student Affairs, at UCSD's Thurgood Marshall College. As the lead Student Affairs professional at the college, she was responsible for developing and coordinating all co-curricular programs promoting student learning and development.
Ashanti has proven experience providing oversight for student organizations including student government. She is very adept at developing leadership opportunities for students and understands the critical nature of well managed student discipline procedures. As a manager, she has had extensive responsibility for the supervision and training of professional and support staff, the development of Student Affairs budgets and the formulation of strategic goals to guide future program development.
One very important factor in Ashanti’s background is that she began her career at Mesa College in 1993, as a counseling intern in the EOPS program. Subsequently, in 1994, she was an adjunct counselor at Grossmont College and worked with underrepresented students in the areas of educational planning, goal setting and career development.
