The certificate program prepares the student for certification as a dietetic service supervisor. The DSS, working under the supervision of a Registered Dietitian in long- term care facilities, would schedule and supervise the food service employees, order food, screen newly admitted patients for chewing and swallowing needs, meet with other health care team members to discuss issues related to the food intake of the residents, and be familiar with all positions within that department. The DSS is also qualified to work in food service for assisted-living, acute care or adult day care centers.
The certificated program is a 16 unit program which can be completed in 1 year for full-time students and is approved/certified by the California State Department of Health Services.
