Description: This course provides general information regarding the field of physical therapy (PT) to those persons who have been admitted into the program or who have an interest in the profession of PT. The course focuses on the history, development, goals and current issues of the profession and the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). General legal and ethical principles as well as state laws relating to the delivery of PT services are examined. The relationship of PT to the health care delivery system in the United States, the settings utilized in the delivery of therapy, and an exploration of the roles and functions of the workers in the field and their part on the healthcare team are explored. Medical terminology specific to PT and the need of the health care worker to develop a therapeutic presence are also presented. This course fosters the development of communication skills, interpersonal relationships and professionalism required for the health care field.
