ABOUT THE COLLECTION
The African Art collection at Mesa College was assembled to introduce Mesa College students to art created for use in Africa. It is a valued resource in African art courses offered by Art Historian Dr. Denise Rogers who replaced the founder of the collection, Dr. Barbara Winston Blackmun. Dr. Blackmun established the collection for the college in the late 1970s, when a few examples were gratefully accepted from generous students and friends. The first large donations established the nucleus of a growing collection between 1983 and 1988. The collection has continued to grow over the years and currently there are over 500 pieces in the collection.
Each Semester, Dr. Rogers and students enrolled in Art History classes exhibit selections from the collection in the Glass Gallery located on the first floor of the campus Learning Resource Center (LRC). The college will occasionally borrow fine African art from other collectors, in order to present exhibitions of several weeks' duration, each with a unifying theme.
