The Olympians Volleyball team is proud to announce that 8 of their own were named to the All Conference team for 2011 and one to the All SoCal team! Freshmen Missy Glassett and Kendra Mendicino were both honored with 1st team All Pacific Coast Athletic Conference while fellow classmates, Naomi Tilford and Karlee Anderson and sophomore Ali Loepfe were named to the 2nd Team All PCAC. Rounding out the list for Honorable Mention, were sophomores, Jeana Holman and Bree Johnson and freshman Alexandra "Z" Mootry. Glassett also recieived the high honor of "All SoCal Team" as given by the representatives of all the Southern California community college women's volleyball teams. All these ladies had outstanding seasons and were a large contribution to their team's success.
Olympians battle OCC in Regionals, fall to Pirates 1-4
November 22, 2011
The Olympian women dominated the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference and shared the Championship title with fellow powerhouse Grossmont. The Griffins happened to be the only team to beat Mesa in conference in a very heated battle that went to 5 games. As co-champion, Mesa earned a bid to the Regional Tournament and got the #9 seed which meant playing on the road against the #8 seed Orange Coast College.
OCC used their home court advantage and took charge of Mesa in the first game beating them 13-25 but Mesa roared back to push a closer 2nd game which ended in OCC’s favor 21-25. It would be in the third game that the blue and gold would find their footing and shift the momentum in their favor. This crucial 3rd game ended with a Mesa win 25-21 breaking OCC from a 3 game run to win the match. The Olympians had an uphill battle to stay in the game and would try to beat the Pirates in game 4 but they fell short and lost 23-25, giving OCC the match.
Reflecting back on the match, Coach Kim Lester felt that her team was capable of playing better than they did against the Pirates. “We had some bright spots and at times executed well,” but Mesa also struggled and that would be the main factor for Mesa’s loss. Despite the disappointing loss, Mesa ended their season with a 17-6 record and “improved tremendously and reached our goal of winning conference,” according to Coach Kim Lester.
Women earn bid to Regional Tournament as #9 seed, face Orange Coast College
As co-champions of the PCAC, the Olympians earned a spot in the Regional Tournament and got a decent spot as the #9 seed out of 16 positions. The team will travel to the #8 seed, Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa on Tuesday, Nov 22 at 6pm. This season will mark the 9th post season appearance for Head Coach Kim Lester since she took over the program in 2002. Of those 9 years, she coached her team to 2 Regional Championships (2006, 2007) and then 2 State Tournament appearances (2nd place 2004, 4th place 2006.) The Olympians had a tremendous season in their conference with a 11-1 record with their only loss falling to fellow PCAC Champion, Grossmont College. Overall the team had an impressive record of 17-5 with some tough losses to top teams like LA Pierce and El Camino.
Olympians are PCAC Co-Champions, 12th in program history
The Mesa women earned their 12th Pacific Coast Athletic Conference title following their victory over Imperial Valley College on Weds., Nov 16 at Mesa. The Olympians share the honor this year with Grossmont College who went 1-1 with Mesa and the only team to beat them in conference play. With a first place spot, Mesa earned a bid for the Regional Tournament and will find out their fate at the end of the week.

Mesa takes 1st Place in the PCAC, beat Palomar 3-0
October 14, 2011
Still hiding the emotional high from their victory over Grossmont, Mesa was going to be playing for something very big as they faced Palomar College: 1st Place in the PCAC. The momentum was still with the Olympians as they confidently walked into their own gym hungry for another win and Palomar was in their sights. The Comets never had a chance and never got a chance to get their momentum going as Mesa immediately took charge winning game a decisive game 1 25-13 and a second 25-12. Game 3 would look like it was going to be more of the same but Palomar would make some adjustments and try to push with the help of a strong setter, a solid outside hitter and very active middle blockers. Mesa would stay to their game philosophy and play “Mesa VB” and never give up as they pushed the Comets to their limits. The result was a close third game in which Mesa won 25-21 giving them the match 3-0 and the coveted, 1st Place in the PCAC.
Contributing to the win was the Olympians' ability to remain focused and disciplined which allowed the team to have an impressive hitting percentage of .317 with 11 service aces and only committing 5 errors. Again, Naomi Tilford was a force in the Mesa arsenal with 14 kills and 3 aces and Karlee Anderson stepped in with 9 kills while Bree Johnson served 4 aces against Palomar and worked for 9 digs. Going forward, the team will still have to build from their last two wins and “improve 1% every day,” according to Coach Kim Lester.
Mesa knocks down tough opponent, beat Grossmont 3-2
October 12, 2011
The Olympians were facing the biggest match of their season so far and they couldn't seem more ready and confident to take on Grossmont College at the Griffins home gym. Grossmont had been unbeatable in conference play and had just been ranked as the number 3 team in Southern California and holds the #5 ranking in the state. This athletic and explosive team was building on a 12-1 record but that all changed when Mesa walked into their gym.
Mesa immediately went to battle with the Griffins and took the first game in a close 25-20 but then dropped a second 13-25. The third game was a true battle of skills and athleticism as Grossmont pushed and Mesa responding by pushing back harder and beat the home team 26-24 to take the series to 2-1 in the best of 5 match. With only one game left to take a victory, the Griffins surged forward and took game 4 from Mesa 20-25 forcing a tough battle for the win in game 5. With a big defensive presence at the net in the form of Naomi Tilford, Grossmont's outside hitters were stifled and Mesa took a command of the last game and won 15-7 giving Mesa the right to play for the top of the conference.
Thanks to the offensive arsenal of Kendra Mendicino who had 12 kills, Tilford with 11, and excellent passing from setter Missy Glassett who earned 39 assists and scored 4 kills of her own, Mesa was a terrific offensive threat. Defensively, Mesa needs more consistent production out of the middle blockers if they are going to stay successful and earn their spot in the top of the conference. How does Coach Kim Lester sum up the performance of her team? “So proud of this team! They believed they could win and it showed.”
Sept 30, 2011
The Mesa women started their conference play a little slow against City College at Harry West Gym. Perhaps their nerves were getting the best of them in the first game as they were slow to get going and then self defeated with errors giving the Knights the first game. A scrappy City College would try to take another game from Mesa but the women's team wouldn't be outdone and took command for the next three games and earned their first conference win of the 2011 season improving their overall record to 7-4 and Pacific Coast Athletic Conference record 1-0. Helping the in win was a trio of freshmen Kendra Mendicino with 13 kills and 7 digs with Karlee Anderson matching kills with 13 and making 5 blocks and Missy Glassett helped her team with 38 assists and served up 6 aces to City College. As they move forward in the PCAC they are going to have to play with more consistency and have a purpose when they step onto the court. If they play to win, the blue and gold will have no problem competing with the rest of the conference and will regain their place at the top.
Sept 28, 2011
Riding the high from their victory over Cypress College, the Olympians walked into the gym at Irvine Valley College ready to take the home team by surprise. Mesa showed they meant business when they took charge in the first game with several big leads but they weren't able to hold those leads and lost a close game of 22-25. The second and third games would be the same for Mesa as they continued to push Irvine to their limits and executed well at the net. Unfortunately for Mesa, Irvine is one of the top teams in Orange County and they weren't able to sustain their leads despite being able to stay close. According to Coach Kim Lester, her team did match up well against a strong competitor and realized the level of play that they are capable of but going forward, they have to not allow their frustrations get the better of them. Although it was a disappointing loss for the Olympians, Missy Glassett did have an outstanding game as she played all out and dug some very hard hit balls by Irvine. Glassett was able to post 21 assists for her team with 3 kills of her own and 9 digs.
The Women's Volleyball team kicked off their own 26th Annual Mesa Invitational with a quick victory over the #5 seed Riverside College. They dominated the Tigers 25-19, 25-16, and 25-15 utilizing excellent passing by setter Missy Glassett, who posted 23 assists and 6 kills in the match. Also helping the win was sophomore libero, Ali Loepfe who served up 4 aces and produced 11 digs while freshman middle blocker, Alexis Mootry had 4 blocks and 6 kills against Riverside. The pressure of the Olympians got to the Tigers early causing them to struggle in finding their rhythm and the consistency that they would need to return the strong serves of the Mesa team.
In their second game of the day, Mesa would face a tough College of the Canyons team. Mesa would strike early against the #4 seed taking the first two game 25-21 and 25-18 but Mesa would lose their momentum and the next 3 to a surging Canyons squad. The blue and gold did manage to post some impressive numbers regardless of the final outcome. Opposite Karlee Anderson lead the team with 13 kills and outside hitter Kendra Mendicino wasn't far behind with 12 kills of her own while Ali Loepfe earned 29 digs and served 4 aces. Head Coach Kim Lester feels that if her team can have confidence in their teammates and themselves and not dwell on previous mistakes that they will become the team they should be.
What a difference a day makes. The Olympians were able to recover from their loss to Canyons and traveled to Grossmont College to defeat Bakersfield College in 5 games. Injuries plagued the Mesa line up from the day before but thanks to the efforts of freshman Jamey Hanson and sophomore Asia Machitar the Olympians were able to hold off Bakersfield. The team started out very strong and overcame the changes in the personnel and line up and took the first two games away 25-21, and 25-19. Unfortunately, the other team found their groove and came back winning the next two games 22-25, 13-25 forcing a tie breaking game 5. With a fire under them, Mesa attacked the 5th game and dominated 15-7 taking the match. Coach Lester commented on the game, “I'm proud of them for finishing and a great team effort.”
The next team to play Mesa was Glendale College from Arizona who is usually a powerhouse in the Mesa Invitational and one of the top teams in Arizona. The women's volleyball team played under the same circumstances and plan that they were so successful with against Bakersfield but now they faced a tougher team and with more injuries. Mesa would lose the first set 16-25 and in the 2nd they faced a greater challenge when teammates Bree Johnson and Kendra Mendicino collided as they both dove for a ball. Mendicino's jaw collided with Johnson's head causing a concussion to both players. Johnson would be taken to the hospital immediately while Mendicino would stay and watch her teammates try to retake the momentum from Glendale. Mesa sadly lost that 2nd game 9-25 but dug deep in the 3rd game and won a close 25-22 and put some pressure on the Arizona team. On a positive note, Alexis “Z” Mootry continued to dominate in the middle and earned 10 kills and 4 blocks and she seems to “get better every time she steps on the court,” according to her coach, Kim Lester.
Regardless of the injuries that they sustained and with the help of the entire Mesa squad, the Olympians were able to finish at 6th place out of 16 teams at their own tournament.

The women's volleyball started their road trip to Woodland Hills off with a victory over Ventura College in a quad tournament at LA Pierce College. The Olympians underestimated their opponent and lost the first game 23-25, giving momentum to the Pirates going into the second game. Fortunately for the Olympians, they were able to recover and get back to winning. Mesa intensified their game and played at the level of competition that has come to be expected of them and dominated Ventura in the next three games winning 25-16, 25-10, and 25-9. Aiding in the victory were sophomores Asia Machitar with 14 kills and a .330 hitting efficiency and Bree Johnson with 11 kills and a .290 hitting efficiency. Of this season's freshmen, Missy Glassett helped her team with 39 assists, while Rachel Lopez came up big with 18 digs on the game. With their first win under their belt, the women's volleyball team is back on track to uphold their tradition of winning by playing with superior effort and passion.
Sept. 9, 2011
Facing the 2010 State Champion was a daunting task for the Olympians but this is not a team that knows how to quit. LA Pierce College's team is known for its athleticism and talent and perhaps will be a contender to repeat as State Champions. However, none of that seemed to matter to the Olympian women as they faced the Brahmas in their second game of the day. The volleyball women showed they belonged on the court as they fought with intense effort and passion and played a close first game 19-25. Their efforts and focus would not waiver despite the momentum of LA Pierce in all three games. Unfortunately, Mesa would lose all 3 games in the best of 5 series but high praise came from the LA Pierce College coach when he said, “this is the first time we've been pushed.”
Congratulations to Delea Pursel, Amanda Harris, and team captain Kelsey Magness as they continue their playing careers at 4 year univerisites. Delea and Amanda will remain teammates at Cal State Dominguez with Delea earning a scholarship. Kelsey Magness earned herself a full athletic scholarship at Adams State University in Colorado. Pursel, a 2 year starter who was also named "Pacific Coast Athletic Conference 1st Team" is from University City HS. The 6-1middle blocker will be studying kinesiology. Harris, a 5-3 libero, is a walk on at Cal State Dominguez and attended Canyon Crest Academy with plans to study English. While at ASU, Magness the 5-9 outside hitter, will be studying Psychology while playing. At the conclusion of her second year at Mesa, she was named to the "Pacific Coast Athletic Conference 1st Team."
2010 season ends on a high note
The women's volleyball team made a strong showing for their 2010 campaign. The Lady Olympians were 14-8 overall and 10-2 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, earning them 2nd place in their conference behind Grossmont. At the conclusion of the season, sophomore players Delea Pursel and team captain Kelsey Magness' were honored by the coaches of the PCAC and were named to the 2010 1st Team All Conference team.
The preseason schedule was very competitive and loaded with top teams in the state including Cypress College, and current state champion, LA Pierce College. Although Mesa lost 6 games in their preseason match-ups, 5 of those loses where to teams who finished in the top 10 in the southern region for the state. In the PCAC, the women stayed strong and focused taking 2nd place behind Grossmont College, who gave Mesa their only 2 loses in the conference. Mesa, however, has seen its share of conference titles and has been named “PCAC Conference Champion” 5 out of the last 7 years and in 4 of those years, they were undefeated in conference.
The outlook for the 2011 season is promising for the Olympians as 6 players return from the 2010 team. Currently, they are taking full advantage of the offseason and focusing on their conditioning and sharpening their volleyball skills in their offseason classes.
Since Coach Kim Lester took over the program in 2002, the Lady Olympians have celebrated tremendous success with a 97-11 in conference and have qualified for post season play in 7 out of 9 years under Coach Lester. She has coached her team to 2 state tournaments where they were State Runner-up in 2004 and 4th in 2006.
Excellence on the court is heavily emphasized as it is in the classroom. The 2010 team earned a 3.18 gpa overall and continue their successful run in the classroom and on the court as many of Coach Lester's student-athletes have moved on with scholarships to 4 year colleges like, San Diego State University, Cal State Fullerton, Idaho State, and Northeastern University.

After a 2-0 start to the 2010 season, the Mesa women's volleyball team suffered a 15-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 15-13 loss to host Long Beach City. Despite a 2-1 set lead, the Olympians could not match LBCC's emotion and tenacious defense.
The Mesa women then hosted its annual Mesa Invitational tournament. In the tournament's 25th year, the Olympians finished 6th in the tourney, with splits on both days. Friday started with a 26-24, 16-25, 25-17, 25-13 win over Cerritos, followed by a 25-27, 25-23, 25-14, 25-11 loss to Glendale (AZ). The Mesa women opened Saturday play with a 25-14, 25-19, 25-20 win over Bakersfield, before ending its tournament run with a 25-15, 25-18, 25-23 loss to Riverside.
The Mesa women then embarked on a brutal three-match run, which would see it play three teams ranked in the state's Top 6. Despite spirited play in sets one and three, the Olympians fell to then #6 Cypress 21-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-13. Mesa WVB then went on the road to #4 L.A. Pierce, falling 25-15, 25-19, 25-12 in a lackluster performance. Irvine Valley, then ranked # 3, came down to San Diego and handed Mesa a 25-16, 25-18, 25-13 loss, leaving the Lady Olympians with a 4-6 record as it headed into Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play in October.
9/3/10 – The Mesa WVB team responded to its mediocre effort on Wednesday night with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-17 sweep of visiting Cal Lutheran, at the Mesa gymnasium.
Strong serving from the entire starting lineup forced CLU out of system much of game one, resulting in an easy Olympian set win. Playing its season opener, the Regals responded with stronger play in set two, but back-to-back Laura Plumb and Kelsey Magness kills pushed Mesa to an early 8-5 lead in game two. A Magness ace got Mesa to 18-13, and a Karina Heredia kill pushed Mesa to 20-17. Another Plumb kill made the score 22-18, on the way to an Olympian set two win. After CLU went out to a six-point lead to start set three, an ace in a three point Plumb serving streak drew the Olympians even at 11. A kill from Delea Pursel and an ace from Ali Loepfe pushed Mesa to a two-point lead at 16-14. A Jeana Holman kill would get Mesa to 19-17, a Plumb kill made it 21-17, and a kill from Magness gained match point and the win for the Olympians.
The Olympian ladies travel to Long Beach City College on Wednesday, Sept. 8, for a non-conference match.
9/1/10 - The Mesa WVB team survived an error-filled effort by both squads, to come out with a 25-23, 24-26, 17-25, 25-11, 15-12 win over visiting Saddleback College in the season opener for both teams.
A Kelsey Magness kill drew Mesa even at 16-16 in game one, and a Tamara Sims kill and ace helped Mesa forge a 22-19 lead, on the way to the set one win. An Alycia Dawson kill helped Mesa to a 17-12 lead in game two, but the Gauchos used untimely Mesa errors to regain the lead and set win. After another Saddleback win in game three, a lineup change fired up the Olympians in game four. A Dawson ace got Mesa to 10-4, Karina Heredia and Magness kills increased the lead to 13-7 and 16-9, three consecutive Alli Loepfe aces made it 19-9, and another Magness kill finished off the 25-11 set win. After Saddleback went out 5-1 to begin game five, a Magness kill drew the Olympians even at 5-5. Two Laura Plumb kills got Mesa to a 10-8 lead, and a Heredia kill gave Mesa three match points. A Gaucho service error gave Mesa the match win.
The Olympians continue their short two-match homestand on Friday, when they host Cal Lutheran at 6:00 pm in the Mesa Gymnasium.
