Mesa has won 5 straight PCAC Championships and won 43 PCAC matches in a row dating back to 2008. Mesa finishes the 2013 season with a 20-5 record overall and 8-0 in the PCAC. Mesa advanced to the Final Four of Tennis before losing to Ventura College in the Southern California Dual Team Finals 5-3. Mesa will conclude the 2013 season ranked #3 in the State.

Mesa Drops 5-3 Decision in SoCal Finals; Ojai Next
Ventura, CA 4/20/13 Mesa advanced to within a game of it's first Dual Team State Finals on Saturday before dropping a 4-hour marathon to Ventura College that included three 3-set matches.
"It was an incredible run," said Olympian Head Coach, Michael Hootner. "Give Ventura credit. They stepped up and although we played really well today, they played just that much better and that was the difference," concluded Coach Hootner.
Mesa concludes the year with a 20-5 record (8-0 in PCAC play) and will now gear up for the OJAI State Championship. 5/6 of Mesa's singles players and all 3 doubles teams qualified for the Regionals. For more information go to www.ojaitourney.org.
Survive and Advance; Mesa Upsets #2 COD 5-2; Advances to SoCal State Finals
Indian Wells, CA 4/16/13 Mesa continued it's hot play on Tuesday in Indian Wells, California's Vintage Club by beating the #2 ranked College of the Desert Road Runners 5-2 in the semi-finals of the Southern California Dual Team Regional Championship.
Mesa won at #2 and #3 doubles before losing at #1 doubles to take a 2-1 lead going into singles. It was nip and tuck in every match. COD evened the score at 2-2 after winning at #1 singles but then Mesa won at #2, #3, and #4 singles respectively to account for the final score.
"This was a great win for the program," said Olympian Head Coach Michael Hootner. "I'm especially happy for these young men as they have worked extremely hard this year and are peaking at the right time," concluded Coach Hootner.
Mesa is now 20-4 overall after going 8-0 in the PCAC.
Santibanez Wins 2013 Player-of-the-Year and Coach Hootner wins 2013 Coach-of-the-Year
SAN DIEGO, CA 4/13/13 Mesa's sophomore sensation, Rodrigo Santibanez (Hermosillo, Mexico) and Head Coach Michael Hootner were named 2013 Player-of-the-Year and Coach-of-the-Year, respectively. Santibanez, Mesa's #1 singles player beat the defending PCAC Player-of-the-Year, Tracy Beblie from Palomar College in the finals of the PCAC Championship, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5).
Coach Hootner, in his sixth year at the helm of the Olympian program, was named 2013 Coach of the year. Hootner has won five consecutive Coach-of-the-Year awards. His current squad is 19-4 overall going into the semi-finals of the Southern California Dual Team Championships this Tuesday, at the Vintage Club versus College of the Desert. Hootner's squads over the last five plus years have won 43 consecutive PCAC matches.
Mesa is ranked #3 in Southern California while COD is #2. The match begins at 2pm and will be broadcast live at, www.ustream.tv. Once here, search coachhootner and then select the Dual Playoffs Rd. 2 to watch the match live.
Mesa Wins PCAC Singles and Doubles Titles
SAN DIEGO, CA 4/13/13 San Diego Mesa College continued it's amazing year by sweeping the PCAC Singles and Doubles titles at the Balboa Tennis Center. Mesa's sophomore sensation, Rodrigo Santibanez (Hermosillo, Mexico), the PCAC Player-of-the-Year beat Tracy Beblie from Palomar College, the reigning PCAC Singles Champion and defending PCAC Player-of-the-Year in an epic 3-set finale, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5) that saw one game have 12 deuces in the final set that lasted 25 minutes.
It was an all Mesa doubles finals between freshmen sensations James Tenbroeck (Minden, NV) and Connor Eck (Torrey Pines, San Diego, CA) versus sophomores, Santibanez and Giordano Valdez (Rancho Bernardo, San Diego, CA). Eck and Tenbroeck we're able to prevail after trailing 4-1 by winning 7 of the next 9 games to prevail, 8-6.
Mesa Wins 1st Round of State Playoffs 5-1
SAN DIEGO, CA 4/9/13 Mesa continued it's hot play by beating Glendale College from the Western States Conference in a 1st Round quarter-final match of the Southern California Dual Team Regional Championships, 5-1. Mesa had to replace one of it's top players, Gleb Bilyalov due to a lower back injury but Sean Lee stepped in at #6 and did a phenomenal job. "This is why you have depth," said Olympian Head Coach, Michael Hootner. "Everyone stepped up, especially our sophomores, Valdez and Santibanez," concluded Coach Hootner.
Mesa won #2 and #3 doubles while losing at #1 doubles for a 2-1 lead going into singles. Mesa won at #1, #3, and #4 to account for the five points and the victory. Mesa will now travel to Palm Desert to play the #2 seed, College of the Desert at the Vintage Club. Click here for more information about the Vintage Club. Mesa is the #3 seed in the State Tournament and is now 19-4 overall after going 8-0 in PCAC play.
Mesa Completes 5th Straight Perfect PCAC Campaign
SAN DIEGO, CA 4/2/13 Mesa completed an unprecedented 5th straight undefeated PCAC Championship by beating cross-town rival, San Diego City College 8-1. Mesa has now won 43 consecutive PCAC matches dating back to 2008. Freshman James Tenbroeck beat City's Rafa Martinez, 6-1; 6-3 to lead the charge. "It's been a fun run but now we have to work on preparing our games and minds for Riverside and then the playoffs," said Head Coach Michael Hootner. "The second season (the playoffs), our March Madness is just beginning and we are excited and humbled by this opportunity," concluded Coach Hootner.
Olympians Defeat #19 Ranked Amherst, 2011 NCAA D3 National Champions
SAN DIEGO, CA 3/23/13 Mesa ran it's record to 16-2 overall, 7-0 in the PCAC after a 7-2 victory over the 19th ranked Amherst Lord Jeffs and 2011 NCAA D3 National Champions. Mesa avenged last year's 9-0 loss much to the delight of Olympian Head Coach Michael Hootner. "We showed our toughness today," said Coach Hootner. "To win 4/5 singles matches that went to a 3rd set shows how good of shape we are in and how mentally tough this team is," concluded Coach Hootner.
Mesa took #2 and #3 doubles while winning all the singles matches except at #2 to account for the final score.
42 and Counting; 1 More PCAC Win for 5 Straight Perfect Seasons
El Centro, CA 3/21/13 Mesa continued it's amazing streak by beating Imperial Valley 9-0. Mesa is one win away against San Diego City College on April 2, from completing 5 straight perfect PCAC campaigns. "It's been a remarkable run so far," said Head Coach Michael Hootner. "Hopefully we can continue to improve and make a run in the state individual and team playoffs," concluded Coach Hootner.
41 in a Row after Clean Sweep of Grossmont 9-0
SAN DIEGO, CA 3/19/13 Mesa made it 41 conference wins in a row dating back to 2008 after it's 9-0 win over crosstown rival Grossmont College. "Grossmont is a much improved team over last year," said Head Coach Michael Hootner. "But we didn't have a letdown today which says a lot about this teams focus. They don't assume because they have a Mesa uniform on that it's an automatic win because of our past successes. They continue to work hard and want to improve individually and collectively which is what I love about this team," concluded Coach Hootner.
Olympians Win 40th Straight PCAC Match (2008-2013) and 5th Straight PCAC Title
SAN DIEGO, CA 3/14/13 After disposing of Orange Coast College on Tuesday in a non-conference match in Costa Mesa, 8-1, Mesa won it's 40th consecutive PCAC match (2008-2013) over Palomar College, 6-3. "We've had a target on our backs for four years and it's a real credit to the student-athletes during this amazing streak that so many different teams have been able to be a part of it," said Coach Hootner. "We still have work to do however," added Coach Hootner. "We have to play smarter, especially in doubles if we hope to compete with the best teams in the state," concluded Coach Hootner.

Olympians Continue to Roll After 7-2 Rout of L.A. Pierce
LOS ANGELES, CA 3/8/13 Olympian Head Coach Michael Hootner was nervous about today's match because his top two singles players, Rodrigo Santibanez and Gleb Bilyalov were out of the lineup. His Olympians reassured him quickly and convincingly as they took five of six singles in less than 75 minutes to secure the victory, their 11th in 13 tries.
"Our depth really helped us today," said Coach Hootner. "I'm very proud of this group to be able to play so well despite losing two of it's top singles players," concluded Coach Hootner.
Mesa Improves to 10-2 with 6-3 Win Over Irvine Valley
SAN DIEGO, CA 3/7/13 Mesa won for the 10th time in 12 tries in 2013 on Thursday, with a 6-3 hard fought win over Irvine Valley College. There were four 3-set 10-point super tiebreakers (with both team winning two of them) contributing to the matches nearly 5-hour match. Mesa won at #1, #2, #4, and #5 singles and #2 and #3 doubles to account for the final margin.
"Irvine Valley is an exceptional club," said Olympian Head Coach Michael Hootner. "I am very proud of our groups ability to maintain it's composure and resiliency," concluded Coach Hootner.
Mesa Improves to 9-1 after 5-4 Win over Santa Barbara City
SAN DIEGO, CA 3/1/13 Mesa improved to 9-1 after a 5-4 win over Santa Barbara City College. Mesa won at #2, #3, #4, #5, and #6 singles to win the match before doubles even began. "Our guys really stepped up today," said Olympian Head Coach Michael Hootner. "The thing I love about this team is that they are not satisfied. They want to continue to improve and I think that's what's unique about this squad from the previous ones I've coached. I'm excited to watch them to continue to progress as we start the second half of the season," concluded Coach Hootner.
Mesa Wins PCAC Matches #38 and #39 in a Row
SAN DIEGO, CA 2/28/13 Mesa continued it's streak of consecutive PCAC wins by beating Imperial Valley College and San Diego City College this week, both by a score of 9-0.
Mesa has won 39 consecutive PCAC matches dating back to 2008. Gleb Bilyalov led the Olympians in singles with a win at #1 singles by getting redemption over City's Rafa Martinez, 6-3; 7-5 after losing to him twice last year. At #1 doubles, Sean Lee (Coronado High) teamed up with James Tenbroeck (Douglas, NV) to lead the doubles sweep.
Mesa Beats Grossmont and Palomar
SAN DIEGO, CA/SAN MARCOS, CA 2/21/13 & 2/22/13 Mesa continued it's dominance over PCAC foes on Thursday and Friday by beating Grossmont College 6-0 (in a rain shortened match) and Palomar College on Friday, 7-2 for it's 36th and 37th consecutive PCAC wins dating back to 2008. "It's an amazing accomplishment considering so many different teams and lineups have had a role in the streak," said Head Coach Michael Hootner. "The target has been on our backs for a while and we love the challenge of always getting everyone's best because it keeps us focused and makes us better individually and collectively," concluded Coach Hootner.
Mesa Beats Mt. San Jacinto 9-0
SAN DIEGO, CA 2/14/13 Mesa steamrolled over the 2012 defending State Runner-Ups, 9-0 on Thursday afternoon. MSJC only had 5 players so Mesa was up 2-0 before the match even began. Mesa then won the 5 singles and 2 doubles matches for the final margin. Mesa is now 4-0 on the season. Connor Eck (Photo) from Torrey Pines combined with Rodrigo Santibanez to win at #1 doubles 8-4.

SAN DIEGO, CA 3/7/13 The Olympians made it a perfect three for three on the 2013 season by beating Cypress College, 9-0. Mesa didn't drop a single game at any of the 6 singles or 3 doubles.
"This is a good win but we need to continue to stay focused and get in better shape as the weather continues to get more hot as the season progresses," said Olympian Head Coach Michael Hootner.

CERRITOS, CA 2/5/12 The Olympians made it 2 for 2 on the 2013 season by beating Cerritos College, 7-2 on Tuesday. The Olympians won at 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles and 2 and 3 doubles to account for the final margin.
Olympians Open 2013 With 7-2 Thrashing of Saddleback
Mission Viejo, CA 1/31/13 Mesa opened the 2013 season in style on Thursday, by beating Saddleback 7-2 in Mission Viejo. The Olympians won at #1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 singles and #1 and 3 doubles.
"We have very high expectations this year," said Olympian Head Coach Michael Hootner. "This was a great first step for this group and if we continue to work hard the skies the limit with this group," concluded Coach Hootner whose squad is going for its 5th consecutive PCAC Title.
Jason Sinkoff Named Assistant Men's Tennis Coach
SAN DIEGO, CA 1/2/13 Head Coach Michael Hootner has named former Torrey Pines and Palomar College standout, Jason Sinkoff his Assistant Coach.
Coach Sinkoff begins his first year under Olympian Head Coach Michael Hootner. "We are incredibly lucky to have Jason as a part of Coaching staff. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program and his impact has already been felt by me and the players," said Coach Hootner.
After playing at Torrey Pines High School and Palomar College where he played #1 singles and doubles for the Comets before transferring to NCAA D1 Hofstra University in New York. He finished his final three years there playing #4, #5 and #6 singles and #2 and #3 doubles.
Coach Sinkoff earned his Bachelor's Degree from Hofstra and hopes to one day earn his Master's Degree. He is from San Diego, CA, and currently resides in San Diego.
Alex Richards Signs with McKendree University (IL)
Lebanon, Illinois 1/7/13 Alex Richards, a native of Cornwall, England and a member of the 2012 Mesa College PCAC Championship Squad has signed with McKendree University, an NCAA D2 school.
McKendree Men's and Women's Tennis Coach, Chris McMillin is excited about the late addition of Alex to his program. "Alex is a great kid and will add some much needed depth to our lineup," said Coach McMillin.
Richards played #4 singles and #2 doubles for the Olympians 2012 squad and earned a trip to the Southern California Regionals last season. Alex is a Kinesiology major. Congrats Alex! We are very proud of you!

Former Mesa All-American Alex Nichols Commits to Cal Lutheran
SAN DIEGO, CA 8/9/12 Former Mesa All-American, Alex Nichols, verbally committed to Cal Lutheran today. "It's going to be a great experience," said Nichols. "There was something about the intimacy of Cal Lu being a small school that was so attractive to me. It's a great academic school and has a great tennis program as well. I want to thank Mesa and Coach Hootner for making this possible. It would not have happened without their support over the last three years. I had a great experience at Mesa," concluded Nichols.
Nichols during his two years with the Olympians was 38-15 in singles and 25-12 in doubles. During the 2010 campaign, Nichols qualified for the State Championships in singles and doubles. He was the 2-time PCAC Player-of-the-Year by winning the singles and doubles titles during both of his seasons.
Coach Hootner Wins Fourth Consecutive Coach-of-the-Year Award
SAN DIEGO, CA 4/16/12 Head Coach Michael Hootner won his fourth consecutive Coach-of-the-Year award. Coach Hootner's 2012 squad finished the year 12-7 overall and 8-0 in PCAC play.
Coach Hootner's squads dating back to 2008 have won 35 consecutive PCAC matches. "This award wouldn't be possible without having such amazing Assistant Coaches like Coach Andrews and Coach Robas along with amazing, hard-working and dedicated student-athletes," said Coach Hootner.
Baca and Bilyalov Win PCAC Doubles Title; Baca Runner-Up in Singles; Ojai Tourney Up Next
SAN DIEGO, CA 4/21/12 The Olympians finished the 2012 PCAC post-season in terrific fashion. The doubles final was Mesa vs Mesa. Ben Ward and Alex Richards faced off against Gleb Bilyalov and Lorenzo Baca. Bilyalov and Baca, the #1 seed in the tourney won, 6-2; 6-2.
In singles, Baca beat Bilyalov in one semi-finals and Mesa's Alex Richards lost to the #1 seed from Palomar, Tracy Beblie. Baca lost to Beblie 6-0, 6-1 in the finals. "After 9 matches in 3 days, I simply ran out of gas in the finals," said Baca/
Next up for the Olympians is the 111th Annual Ojai Tournament in Ojai, California. Playing singles will be Bilyalov, Ward, and Richards. Ward will team up with Baca in doubles while Giordano Valdez will play with Richards. The tourney will begin on April 26 and go through the 29th.

Cohen, First to Continue Playing Career at a 4-Year College, Earns Bachelor's Degree
May 2012 - SAN DIEGO, CA Nissim Cohen (Bonita Vista/San Diego, CA), a member of the 2009 Mesa College Olympians Men's Tennis team, who played his final three seasons at Babson College in Babson Park, Massachusetts, graduated in May, earning his Bachelor's Degree.
Cohen, who played #2 and #3 singles and #1 doubles for the Olympians, was an instrumental part that enabled Mesa to go a perfect 10-0 in conference play and capture it's first Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Championship since 1991.
Babson, an NCAA Division III institution boasts one of the top business schools in the country. Cohen earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business and now owns his own business in San Diego.
"We are very proud of Nissim! He was the first player we sent to the next level and he layed the foundation for all of those that have followed him since," concluded Coach Hootner.
Mesa Qualifies 5 out of 6 Singles and 2 out of 3 Doubles for Southern California Regionals; All Mesa Doubles Final and 3 Players in Singles Semis
SAN DIEGO, CA 4/20/12 Entering the PCAC Tournaments second day, Mesa had already qualified 5 singles and 2 doubles teams for the Southern California Regionals. By the end of the second day heading into the final days matches, Mesa had positioned itself for an all-Mesa doubles final and 3 of the 4 remaining singles players were from Mesa.
The team of Ben Ward and Alex Richards won both doubles matches today as did Mesa's Lorenzo Baca and Gleb Bilyalov. The two teams will face eachother in the Finals on Saturday at 12 noon.
In singles play, Lorenzo Baca who beat fellow teammate Giordano Valdez in the quarter finals, will face teammate Gleb Bilyalov in one singles semi-final tomorrow at 9AM while Mesa's Alex Richards will face the #1 seed, Tracy Beblie from Palomar College.
"I'm extremely proud of our team's effort at the PCAC Tourney," said Head Coach Michael Hootner. "No one was satisfied to simply qualify for the SoCal Regionals (earned by reaching the quarter-finals). They wanted to go as far as they could and this kept them all hungry. And that's what they've done," concluded Coach Hootner.
Mesa Loses to #1 Ranked COD In Playoffs, PCAC, Ojai, SoCal and State Next...Team and Individual Rankings Announced...
Palm Desert, CA 4/18/12 Mesa lost to the #1 team in the State, College of the Desert in the first round of the State Dual Playoffs today, 5-2. "We played a great match," said Olympian Head Coach Michael Hootner. "We had a chance to win at #1 and #3 doubles which would have made the final score potentially 5-4. I'm very proud of these young men for coming into a tough environment and playing some great tennis. It's a great building block for the program and was a good tuneup for this weekends conference tournament," concluded Coach Hootner.
The PCAC Tournament at Balboa Tennis Center will be held this Thursday-Saturday (April 19-21) beginning at noon on Thursday and Friday and 9AM on Saturday.
Ojai will be played in Ojai April 26-29. The SoCal Regionals will be held May 3-5 at Irvine Valley College while the State Championships will be held here in San Diego at the Balboa Tennis Center on May 11-12.

Mesa Streak at 35 After 7-2 Win Over SDCC; Lose to Riverside 6-3; Team and Individual Playoffs Next
SAN DIEGO, CA 3/29/12 Mesa won it's 35th consecutive PCAC match dating back to 2008 after a 7-2 win over San Diego City College. Mesa was victorious at #2, #3, #4, and #5 singles while sweeping all three doubles matches.
Mesa lost to Riverside College the next day, 6-3. The match was square at 3-3 going into doubles before the Olympians got swept. Mesa was without #3 singles and #1 doubles player, Lorenzo Baca who was resting a sore shoulder.
This concludes Mesa's dual match schedule until the Team Playoffs begin On April 17th. The opponent and location are TBD.
The PCAC Individual Championships will be held at the Balboa Tennis club April 19-21. Admission is free.
MESA BEATS IVC; STREAK NOW AT 34
SAN DIEGO, CA 3/27/12 Mesa ran it's PCAC winning streak to 34 straight this afternoon after disposing of a fiesty Imperial Valley squad, 7-2.
Mesa won at #1, #3, #4, and #5 singles and then swept the doubles, including a default at #3.
Mesa will go for it's fourth straight perfect PCAC season on Thursday, when they travel to San Diego City College for a 2pm match. The match will be broadcast live at, www.justin.tv/mhootner.
Mesa Outlasts Palomar in 5-Hour Match, 6-3; Streak Now at 32
SAN MARCOS, CA 3/20/12 Mesa won another incredible PCAC match against a pesky Palomar squad on Tuesday afternoon, 6-3, to run it's PCAC winning streak to 32, dating back to 2008.
Mesa, without two of it's regulars in the lineup today, had to dig deep to outlast the Comets. The score was tied at 3-3, after singles before the team swept Palomar in doubles.
"I'm very proud of our young men today," said Head Coach, Michael Hootner. "We won 4 different tie-breakers today and really stepped it up in doubles. This is the best doubles teams we've had in my 5 years of coaching at Mesa," concluded Coach Hootner.
Mesa Edges Orange Coast, 5-4
COSTA MESA, CA 3/15/12 Mesa showed why Head Coach Michael Hootner believes that this year has the best combination of doubles teams during his five year tenure.
Tied 3-3 after the singles matches, Mesa won at #2 and #3 doubles, 8-4 and 8-4, respectively while dropping an 8-3 decision at #1.

Mesa Improves to 7-3 after 9-0 Rout of Victor Valley
SAN DIEGO, CA 3/13/12 Mesa improved to 7-3 overall and 4-0 in the PCAC after a 9-0 win over Victor Valley. Mesa dropped a 9-0 decision last Friday, to #4 ranked Santa Barbara College. Mesa is currently ranked #7.
The Olympians travel to Orange Coast College on Thursday for a 2PM tilt before returning home on Friday, to play host to Saddleback College, currently ranked #6 in SoCal.
Mesa Wins 8-1; 31 in a Row
SAN DIEGO, CA 3/6/12 Mesa won it's 31st consecutive PCAC match, 8-1 on Tuesday over cross-town rival, San Diego City College. City was coming off of a 5-4 win last Thursday over Grossmont College and had some momentum coming into today's match. But the Olympians proved to be too strong for the Knights. Mesa won #2-#6 singles while sweeping the doubles to account for the final score.
Mesa is now 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the PCAC.
Mesa Beats Imperial Valley for 30th Consecutive PCAC Win
EL CENTRO, CA 3/1/12 San Diego Mesa made it 30 consecutive PCAC victories dating back to 2008 after it's 8-1 win over Imperial Valley College on Thursday.
Mesa won 5 of the 6 singles and then swept all 3 doubles matches.
Mesa is now 5-2 overall and 3-0 in PCAC play.

EL CAJON, CA 2/28/12 Mesa won it's 29th straight PCAC match, 8-1 over Grossmont College. Mesa won 1,3,4,5, and 6 singles while sweeping all three doubles.

Mesa Wins 28th Consecutive PCAC Match
SAN DIEGO, CA 2/23/12 The Mesa Men's Tennis team made it 28 straight PCAC wins on Tuesday, after it's 7-2 win over Palomar College.
Mesa won 5 of the 6 singles matches and 2 of the 3 doubles matches to account for the scoring. "We came out aggressive and played really well against a good Palomar team," said Olympian Head Coach, Michael Hootner.

Mesa Beats Cerritos 7-2
SAN DIEGO, CA 2/16/12 The Olympians won their second straight, 7-2 over Cerritos College. Mesa won at #2, #3, #4, #5, and #6 singles as well as #1 and #2 doubles.
Mesa moves to 2-1 overall while Cerritos falls to 2-3.

Mesa Beats Mt. SAC 8-1; Evens Record at 1-1
SAN DIEGO, CA 2/9/12 The Mesa Olympians won it's home opener on Thursday, 8-1, over Mt. San Antonio College (SAC). Mesa won all six singles matches and then won two of the three doubles matches.
Mesa next plays a week from today at home on Thursday and Friday, 2/16 and 2/17, against Cerritos and L.A. Pierce, respectively. "These two matches will definitely be good tests for us. We are excited for the challenge," concluded Coach Hootner.
Mesa Clinches 4th Straight PCAC Crown; Loses to #1 NCAA D3 Nationally Ranked Amherst
SAN DIEGO, CA 3/22/12 Mesa won it's 4th straight PCAC Title on Thursday, beating Grossmont 9-0. With the win, Mesa has now won 33 consecutive PCAC matches dating back to 2008.
The Olympians are now 10-4 overall and 6-0 in the PCAC.
Mesa lost to the #1 ranked NCAA D3 team in the country on Saturday, 9-0. "It was a great opportunity for our young men to see what it takes to play for one of the top teams in the country," said Olympian Head Coach, Michael Hootner. "It was a great experience for our players," concluded Coach Hootner.
Magarchenko Signs With St. Thomas Aquinas
5/24/11 SAN DIEGO, CA Sophomore, Stanislav Magarchenko (Kazakhstan) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for St. Thomas Aquinas in Sparkill, New York (click here for more info). Magarchenko will have two years of eligibility remaining and will play for Coach Phil Baboulis. "We are very proud of Stanislav", said Olympian Head Coach Michael Hootner. "Stas is one of the hardest working student-athletes I've coached in my 19 years of coaching. We look forward to watching him at the next level. We will miss him a great deal." concluded Coach Hootner. Magarchenko will earn his AA in Business this summer.
"I want to thank Mesa, Coach Hootner, and the tennis program for helping me get this amazing opportunity. I will never forget my time here and I cannot wait to go to New York and play for St. Thomas Aquinas," said Magarchenko.
Mesa Wins PCAC Conference Tourney; Nichols Named PCAC POY For The 2nd Year In A Row; Nichols Wins Singles Title; Nichols/Santibanez Win Double Title
4/16/11 SAN DIEGO, CA The Olympians continued it's three-year dominance of the PCAC by adding to it's already impressive 2011 campaign. Four of Mesa's six singles players (Alex Nichols, Stanislav Magarchenko, Rodrigo Santibanez, and Seans Moazezi) qualified for the Southern California Regionals (SoCals) to be held at the JW Marriott in Palm Desert, 5/5-7. Mesa also had all three doubles teams qualify for SoCals.
Sophomore, Alex Nichols (Bakersfield, CA), earned his second straight Player-of-the-Year honors. Nichols finished the season 20-4 in singles and 17-4 in doubles. Santibanez (Hermosillo, Mexico) also finished 17-4 in doubles. Nichols won the singles title by defeating teammate, Stanislav Magarchenko, 6-2; 6-1. Nichols then teamed up with Santibanez to win the doubles crown in three sets (5-7; 7-6(5); 6-2) over Grossmont's team of Ben Roy and Eddie Corvera. Mesa saved two match points after being down 1-4 and 2-5 in the second set.
"I'm extremely proud of this team," said Olympian Head Coach, Michael Hootner. "We would like to especially thank the four sophomores on this year's squad for their two-year dedication and commitment; Nichols, Magarchenko, Ben Meyer and Kyle McDaniel. We would not have been where we are today had it not been for these four. We wish them the best of luck in all of their future endeavors," concluded Coach Hootner.

Olympians Win Opener Over Santa Barbara 5-4
2/3/11 SAN DIEGO, CA The Olympians opened the 2011 season avenging their 7-2 loss from 2010 with a 5-4 victory today over Santa Barbara City College. "It was a great win for our program," said Olympian Head Coach Michael Hootner. The match lasted 5 hours and 5 of the 9 matches went to 3 sets. "It's always great to win close matches," said Coach Hootner. "It builds your confidence and prepares you for the next time you are in this situation," concluded Coach Hootner. The Olympians are 1-0. Thomson Earns All-American Status
SAN DIEGO, CA 6/17/10 Sophomore, Dane Thomson (San Diego, CA) earned All-American status for 2010 by finishing #4 in the final singles rankings.
Teammate, freshman, Alex Nichols (Bakersfield, CA) finished #9 in the final rankings. The two also finished #9 in the final state doubles rankings. Thomson Earns Mesa Male-Athlete-of-the-Year Award
SAN DIEGO, CA 5/14/10 Sophomore, Dane Thomson (San Diego, CA) won the Mesa College Male-Athlete-of-the-year award this afternoon. Thomson finished the year 17-9 in singles and 10-7 in doubles while earning a trip to the State Championships in singles and doubles. "I'm surprised and humbled," said Thomson. "There are a lot of great male athletes at Mesa considering there are 10 male sports so to be the top vote getter is a great honor. I'd like to thank my coaches and teammates as well because without them, this wouldn't have been possible," concluded Thomson.
Thomson and Nichols Reach "Elite 8" at State Championships
NEWPORT BEACH, CA 5/7/10 Sophomore Dane Thomson (University City High School, San Diego) and Freshman Alex Nichols (Bakersfield, CA) made it to the "Elite 8" in doubles while Dane Thomson made it to the "Elite 8" in singles. "It's an amazing accomplishment to be one of the eight best doubles teams and one of the best eight singles players in the entire state of California," said Olympian Head Coach Michael Hootner. "The team played it's best tennis at the end of the year and that's a real credit to their commitment in the classroom, their conditioning and mental preparation, and proper eating and drinking habits," concluded Coach Hootner.
Nichols Wins Player-Of-The-Year Honors; 3 earn Berth to "Sweet 16" at OJAI
4/20/10 SAN DIEGO, CA By a vote of 3.5 to 1.5, Freshman Alex Nichols (Bakersfield, CA) was voted the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Player-Of-The-Year over teammate Dane Thomson (San Diego, CA). Nichols went 19-3 in singles play while winning the PCAC singles title last Saturday, 6-3, 6-0 over Thomson.
Nichols and teammate Dane Thomson both won two matches at the 110th annual Ojai Tennis Tournament earning berths into the "Sweet 16". Nichols then teamed with James Howard, earning a berth into the round of 16 before bowing out to the #1 seed.
Nichols, Thomson, and Howard will all now prepare for the Southern California Regionals on 4/28. Nichols and Thomson will play both singles and doubles while Howard will play doubles with teammate Kezien Keshavarzi who will be filling in for Hung Truong.
Mesa Wins PCAC Tournament Championship; Nichols Wins Singles Title
4/17/10 SAN DIEGO, CA The Olympians followed up their regular season Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Title with a post-season PCAC title today. It was the first title for the Olympians since 1991.
Freshman, Alex Nichols (Bakersfield, CA) won the PCAC singles title 6-3, 6-0 over teammate Dane Thomson. Both then teamed up in the doubles finals but lost to Palomar 6-0, 1-0 ret.
The Olympians now head up to Ojai from 4/21-24 and then to the SoCal Regional Championships 4/28-5/1.
3 Singles and All 3 Doubles Qualify for SoCal Regionals; Ojai Tourney Next Week
SAN DIEGO, CA 4/15/10 #1 seed, sophomore, Dane Thomson (San Diego, CA), #2 seed, freshman, Alex Nichols (Bakersfield, CA), and freshman Yousef Benhamida (San Diego, CA) all qualified for the Southern California (Individual) Regional Championships in Los Angeles, 4/29-5/1 by making it to the quarter-finals of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference today.
Sophomore James Howard (San Diego, CA) and freshman Hung Truong (San Diego, CA) also earned a trip to Los Angeles in two weeks along with the team of freshman Krishna Samperio (San Diego, CA) and freshman Royce Leon (San Diego, CA).
Olympians Finish 2011 Regular Season 14-2; 8-0
4/7/11 SAN DIEGO, CA Mesa finished the 2011 dual match regular season with an overall record of 14-2, 8-0 in PCAC play after a 6-3 win over Saddleback College. The Olympians won at 1, 2, 3, and 5 singles and 1 and 2 doubles to account for the final margin. The Olympians will now prepare for the PCAC Tournament which will run from 4/14-16 at the Balboa Tennis Center at Morley Field in Balboa Park.

3/31/11 SAN DIEGO, CA The Olympians won their 13th match of the year Thursday, 8-1 over Victor Valley College. Mesa won all the singles matches and #1 doubles but lost at #2 doubles to account for the final margin. Mesa is off until next Thursday, 4/7, where they will travel to Saddleback College to play a 2PM tilt before returning home the next day to finish the regular season against Los Angeles Pierce College at 2PM. EL CAJON, CA 3/25/10 The Olympians had a bye today, but, as a result of Grossmont Colleges 7-2 thrashing of Palomar College, the Olympians win their second straight Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Championship (PCAC), outright. "I'm very proud of this group," said Olympian Head Coach, Michael Hootner whose team has won 18 straight PCAC matches dating back to 2008. "We are in better shape this year, are deeper, and have more experience. The conference was better overall and everyone was trying to knock us off. Last year we sorta surprised everyone but this year, the target was on our back and we did a great job of handling the pressure," concluded Coach Hootner.

Olympians Grind Out 6-3 Win Versus Fullerton
3/2/10 SAN DIEGO, CA The Olympians played a stingy Fullerton College team on Tuesday and eked out a 6-3 win. "We could have lost 5-4 but we were mentally tougher and were in better shape and that was the difference," said Olympian Head Coach Michael Hootner. The match was 3-0 in favor of the Olympians after #1, #2, and #3 singles all won (Thomson, Nichols, and Samperio) but then after #4 and #5 lost (Benhamida and Howard), Kezien Keshavarzi, playing at #6 in place of Royce Leon who was out ill, won a thrilling 3-setter 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. "I'm glad the monkey is finally off my back," said an exhausted but ecstatic Keshavarzi. "I'm glad I was able to help the team be in a better position going into doubles and more importantly win the match," concluded Keshavarzi.

3/15/11 SAN DIEGO, CA The Olympians beat Orange Coast, 5-4 on Tuesday to push their overall record to 8-2. The Olympians and Orange Coast were tied 3-3 after singles. Orange Coast won the #3 doubles match to put them up 4-3. The #2 doubles team of Stanislav Magarchenko (Kazakhstan) and Ben Ward (Torrey Pines, CA) brought the Olympians back to tie the match at 4-4 but not before losing the first set. Olympians Win First PCC Title Since '91; Finish PCC Play 10-0; Earn Berth to SoCal Team Championships
APRIL 2, 2009 - SAN DIEGO, CA The San Diego Mesa College Men's Tennis team won its first Pacific Coast Conference Championship since 1991. The Olympians went 10-0 in conference play and finished 12-3 overall. "I'm very proud of this team," said Olympian Head Coach, Michael Hootner. "We improved physically a great deal throughout the season, but what allowed us to get to the next level was our mental toughness. Everyone improved in this area and that is why I firmly believe we were able to withstand our opponent's best and win all of our conference matches, especially the close ones," concluded Coach Hootner.
The team will then be off for spring break before competing in the SoCal Team Championships on 4/14 (site and time TBA).
The Pacific Coast Conference individual championships will be held at The Balboa Tennis Club from 4/16-4/18 beginning with singles first at 12 noon on the first day.
