242 Care and Prevention of Injuries

This course addresses the fundamentals of elementary human anatomy and their relationship to athletic activity. Training methods and protective equipment are discussed. Treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries are presented. Students will practice bandaging and taping. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.
280 Applied Exercise Physiology

This course is part of the Fitness Specialist Certification Program and examines how the body functions under conditions of exercise stress. Students will study the practical implications of muscle function, cardiorespiratory function, training techniques, and the effect of environment on exercise. (FT) Associate Degree Credit.
281 Applied Kinesiology

This course, a part of the Fitness Specialist Certification Program, will discuss movement as it relates to exercise under both normal and injury conditions. 282 Techniques of Weight Training

This course, part of the Fitness Specialist Certification Program, is designed to provide a thorough review for those intending to teach weight training. The course studies anatomy and physiology, training sequences, available equipment, and safety factors, including contraindications. (FT) Associate Degree Credit.
283 Exercise and Fitness Assessment

This course is designed for the Fitness Specialist Certificate student to learn to assess cardiorespiratory endurance, body fat, muscular strength and endurance, pulmonary function, and blood pressure and to evaluate the results of such tests. (FT) Associate Degree Credit.
284 Nutrition for Fitness and Sports

This course is part of the Fitness Specialist Certification Program. Students will study the basic principles of nutrition and the ramifications of nutrition on sports activities. (FT) Associate Degree Credit.
285 Exercise for Special Populations

This course is designed for the Fitness Specialist Certification student to increase their knowledge on the effects of exercise on special populations and to modify exercise based on age, and medical conditions. Special groups discussed include people afflicted with coronary heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, asthma, obesity, : low back pain, osteoporosis, arthritis, pregnant and post partum women, senior, children, and the physically impaired. (FT) Associate Degree Credit.
286 Techniques of Exercise Leadership
1 3/4 hours lecture, 3/4 hour lab, 2 units

Techniques of instruction in aerobics is a part of the Fitness Specialist Certification Program which studies the principles and techniques involved in teaching aerobics. Students will learn how to construct a physically safe and effective exercise class. (FT)
287 Fitness Specialist Internship
1/2 hour lecture, 6 1/2 hours lab, 2 units

Advisory: Physical Education 283 with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent.
This course is designed to provide students in the Fitness Certification Program with practical experience in screening individuals for risk of heart disease, performing physical fitness testing, and formulating an exercise prescription based on fitness testing indicators. In addition to the lecture and lab scheduled hours there will be additional practicum hours to be arranged. (FT) Associate Degree Credit.
