The San Diego Mesa College Language Center challenges students to embrace a global perspective, offering them an interactive, out-of-class language experience that promotes communicative competence while celebrating cultural diversity. The Language Center complements individual and group study, fostering community and collaborative learning among faculty, staff, and students.

Rationale for a Language Center: Offers a centralized language learning space that brings students together in the virtual and physical realms. Creating a Language Center achieves Departmental and Institutional Learning Outcomes of “Global Awareness,” “Communication,” and “Technological Awareness.

Role of the Language Lab Inside the Language Center:

As the most essential technological component of a comprehensive Language Center, it provides the following critical elements which a computer-equipped classroom does not:

  • Provides students and teachers with hands-on experience with technology-mediated language learning materials.
  • Allows for real time oral communication between all connected stations.
  • Provides fast and efficient methods of collecting audio and written samples, facilitating the measurement of student learning outcomes.
  • Facilitates “comprehensible input”, a necessary ingredient in second language learning.
