District Judge Anthony Battaglia named Mesa College Distinguished Alumnus

By Office of Communications

District Judge Anthony J. Battaglia has been named the 2015 Distinguished Alumnus for San Diego Mesa College. Battaglia will address the college’s Class of 2015 at its 51st commencement exercises, which takes place at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at the Jenny Craig Pavilion at the University of San Diego.

"I should be the one honoring Mesa College, not the other way around,” remarked Battaglia when informed he was named as the college’s 2015 distinguished alumnus. “I don't know where I would be without Mesa.”

“Mesa College allowed me an affordable start my college education, and then prepared me well to complete my degree, go on to law school and succeed in life," he added.

Judge Battaglia studied at San Diego Mesa College in the late 1960s and went on to receive a B.A. from United States International University in 1971, and his J.D. from the California Western School of Law in 1974.

“San Diego Mesa College is proud to call Judge Battaglia an alumnus, and now a Distinguished Alumnus,” notes Dr. Pamela T. Luster. “He is a model of determination, hard work and leadership, and an outstanding example of the level of success within the reach of our graduates.”

Battaglia is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. He joined the court in 2011 after a nomination from President Barack Obama and receiving a unanimous rating of “Well Qualified.” Prior to this position, he served as a federal magistrate judge for the same district court.

In 1993, Battaglia was appointed a magistrate judge in San Diego, with reappointments in 2001 and 2009. Before joining the bench, Battaglia was a lawyer in private practice. He has also served as president of the Federal Magistrate Judges Association (2008) and as president of the San Diego County Bar Association (1992). He now lives in Scripps Ranch with his wife and spends his spare time at his childhood hobby of surfing the local beaches.

The Mesa College Distinguished Alumni Award was established in 2011 to recognize former students who have made significant contributions to society, and whose accomplishments, affiliations, and careers have honored the legacy of academic excellence at San Diego Mesa College. Prior honorees include community advocates Carlos and Linda LeGerrette, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Arnie Robinson, filmmaker Raul Celaya, and artist Miya Hannan.
